Here's a rough sketch of how we've spent our time since release. Somehow the game still keeps us busy every day!
Trombone Champ is three years old! Wow! Where did the time go? Huge thanks to everyone who's supported the game since its release - this was meant to be a small, funny hobby project, and it's thanks to your support that it grew into something much bigger 🙏

My theory was that it started off centering the adventure stuff, but then during user testing everyone asked for standard Mario Kart racing (because users are bad and cannot be trusted)
Resident Evil Village has a segment like this and it’s the scariest part of the franchise
Wait you’re using joy-cons on pc?… do you have them emulating a mouse somehow?
Not in that one, although we've done a bit of research. Unity really doesn't it easy to access the gyro for any controller whatsoever besides a DualShock. And the game is basically unplayable on a controller without gyro. It's very annoying!

It would simply be lazy of us if trombone champ 2 wasn't a Metroidvania, a rhythm music game, *and* a cozy farming sim
Learning lots of valuable lessons from Silksong: - We can spend 6-7 years on a Trombone Champ 2 - There's no chance interest in trombone game will wane at all - Consider pivoting Trombone Champ into a Metroidvania series
(We should note that this an unofficial event, completely managed by the community with no involvement from us. Although it would be fun to host an *official* tournament at some point in the future....)
If you're curious to see what high-level competitive Trombone Champ looks like, check out the Toottally Community Championship stream next Monday! Watching these folks play the game is unbelievable. They are perhaps the greatest athletes alive today.

The Undertale stuff is licensed under Materia, which apparently holds the rights to a ton of video game soundtracks
(We also plan to bring this to the original game in the near future. The VR team has more staff & business-savvy folks, and has been chasing licensing contracts for a while!)

We absolutely would love to! Once we're able to get a Switch 2 Dev kit we plan on trying to get that in. In the meantime the Switch version of the game works quite well on Switch 2 at least!

Horrible, sickening 21:9 ultrawidescreen is coming very soon to Trombone Champ! If you'd like, you can try it out right now by opting into the beta branch on Steam (but please switch back to the main branch once the update is out)

love doing weird menu layouts, but it’s a nightmare for controller support (eg the Nintendo Switch port) and aspect ratios (this would be easy if 16:09 was the tallest, but we support Mac laptop screen resolutions that are taller)
It’s basically just smash br- I mean yep that’s one of our all original layout designs
(Game dev pro tip: don't assemble your menus out of hundreds of 2d shapes that are carefully arranged to perfectly fit a 16:9 screen)

More notes: - It seems to be running at a slightly higher framerate and a few visual things run slightly too quickly (patchable) - The "IR Sensor" button is disabled for Switch 2 Joy-Cons. Our #1 concern was that this button would be active and crash the game or something
Trombone Champ seems to work great on Switch 2! The new Joy-Cons track better than the old ones & loading times are slightly reduced. We didn't get the opportunity to test it ourselves, so this is a relief!
The Target has an old bust of Wagner in the lobby, as if his ghost is asking us "please sir... put Flight of the Valkyries in the game..." sorry Wagner! maybe you shouldn't have been the most notoriously racist & antisemitic composer in all of classical music
We noticed that the screen is basically flat against the cardboard.... a really risky way to package this thing!
(This is a "special method" because it allows you to visit the Bensonhurst Target, which was built into an old movie theater and still has cool architectural details)

Getting workshop working is surprisingly easy - most of the work is just tons of hellish GUI stuff (lots of inputs, error/success popups, confirmation popups, etc)
Steam Workshop is coming to Trombone Champ "pretty soon!" We already have a working beta - just need to add a handful of additional features, test a bit more, and localize!

Currently thinking that it might feel best to hold the stick right & have the heart "fill in" while the stick is held. Holding also prevents players from accidentally favoriting songs if they're mashing the stick to scroll as quickly as possible...

When designing the jukebox in the level editor, I took a lot of inspiration from this book of old Japanese boomboxes, aptly titled "Japanese Old Boombox Collection." IMHO the book is full of inspiration for any GUI, not just music stuff!

Also, this is the first time we've patched PC & Mac without pushing a Nintendo Switch patch on the same day. Apologies - we'll get Rhapody in Blue, and a bunch of other nice improvements, to the Switch asap!
(This update had to change a *lot* about how tracks are loaded, how track data is stored, how high scores are handled, etc... therefore, this update will probably break mods more than recent updates have. Thanks for your patience while the kinks get worked out... 🙏)
