bizarrely, taking your pulse is not so different from scanning a barcode in some ways. presume there's some signal denoising involved etc. but IIRC the oxygenated blood pulsing through veins/arteries disrupts the reflected IR wavelengths periodically? (sorry if that's nonsense, it's late here)
