I remember going in to watching All Out 2023 really bummed about all that but as the show went on, thinking, "holy smokes, this crew is busting their ASS and this show is amazing"
All told, I think that's accurate. Granted, it's fueled some good layers of meta-story (the title loss put Hanger into the tread-water mode that Swerve snapped him out of), but as a business move, yeah, it certainly backfired hard. A real shame.
Also missing the International Title as a focus. That belt is gorgeous
All Out 2023 is low key one of my favorite AEW PPVs. The company was reeling from a certain someone getting fired and the energy from the roster was clearly "let's go out and give the fans a fucking banger show," and they did. And OC was cemented as a main event talent. 🤼

Fast forward through Swerve using Hangman as a springboard to his own world title reign, Hangman veering into the dark side, bottoming out in the All Out cage match, and building himself back up, he eventually got back the swagger Swerve called him out for missing. 3/
The whole feud started with Swerve seeing Hangman drifting aimlessly after losing the title to Punk, and saying to him "man, you were chosen as the top guy around here, and you're not acting like it. If I had been handed your position, I would be the first black world champ by now." 2/
Hanger discussing his feud with Swerve here (which remains one of the best, layered feuds I've ever seen in wrestling) made me think of one specific angle of the Swerve/Hangman story that I really love: that Hangman winning the title at All In was a win for them both: 1/
