This is the same week they are blocking a musical act from coming to Canada because they have spoken out against Israel committing genocide. I do not trust them with this legislation.
The fact that 180 tenants lost their homes in the Sackville fire is horrifying enough. But the current housing market is going to compound the tragedy: where is there for these people, disproportionately older and retired, to go? NS needs affordable housing and controlled rents now. #NSACORN

We may have rescinded the 50K but we still paid huge dollars for the extreme, unjustified police presence. Has there ever been that many totally geared up cops for anything before ?

Well yes you have Irving to contend with. The difference I think here is there a pretense by Libs and Cons to be a bit more socially progressive. But they both are all about power and the monied players. They work in backrooms exclusively and some of them together. They don’t need a super majority

I wonder which HRM budget items you can raise and maintain your designation as a citizen, and which ones designate you as a demonstrator ? If you brought up fixing potholes and funding genocide, would this be too confusing for the mayor and rcmp?
Take a listen and if you're someone who's serious about reconciliation maybe send council a letter explaining that refusing to support a residential school youth empowerment event and throwing money at the Davis Cup (which 100% doesn’t need more money) positions them as pro-genocide.

Whether it’s bike lanes, transphobia, immigration- people can’t handle perceived threats to their own entitlements and project entitlle- ism onto the “threateners’. So their arguments don’t make rational sense, it’s a fear response. We are a fragile culture.
In all my years of doing this work, I know very few people whose rapist was convicted. Every single one of them told me they regretted calling the cops anyway. Imagine how most survivors feel.

We have brought this up to Councillors. Mostly crickets. They love giving money to police.
I agree but it’s the cons and libs who run this province and who are deeply connected with the monied/power players.
Future elections we should publish all the names of the candidates who are the known upper echelon of the backroom boys - especially those who are the con/libs who people are least alerted to.

We actually have a HRM critical report on how HRP acted on a small group of activists on August 18 (2022?). No one mentioned this when approving the new vehicles.

They had the second toxic onslaught when a construction dump was placed there in the early 2000's. That's what's been 'cleaned up" at the public's expense not the dump owners who broke environmental laws. Really I think it's just buried - and it hasn't made any difference to the ground water.

The growing number of communities that are creating civilian (non-police) crisis response programs is a direct product of the defund the police movement. Although police budgets are increasing everywhere, this monumental shift in service delivery is still a major win for the community. ✨️

I know the budget committee approved funding for an early cancer screening program for #Halifax firefighters. But if anyone has reason to file an occupational and health and safety complaint to get appropriate gear and equipment for their jobs, it's firefighters.
I really think suing HRM is the only recourse we have with them. Reports, residents voices etc… mean nothing to them.

The whole cops need a tank to be safe thing just feels like an extension of everyone thinking they need a big SUV or truck to be safe on the road. Everything must get bigger and bigger and bigger. It’s also, obviously, an extension of the militarization of police.
Hi Laura, I do think there is a lot of very valid concern that what police say they do, does not always match with what they actually do. What if a protest or gathering is seen by police as 'getting out of hand" ? We have evidence of past over reactions and escalations by police.
And they have the Aug 18 report in their hands. This is what I presented on 2 weeks ago. And that they will be liable for continuing to increase the capacity of police without even the foundations of basic policies.
Concerns are extremely warranted:
There was a very comprehensive report done on Aug18. We are still waiting for response from HRM. Highlights HRP have problems with escalation, have no use of force policies, are not directed through policies by their oversight body ( BoPC) . Also there are no policies for the use of this vehicle.
A Councillor saying “I heard from hundreds of residents that were against this purchase. No one reached out in favour of this purchase,” and then vote to buy the cops their tank anyway gives one a comforting reassurance that Council is pretty much unchanging, regardless who fills the chairs.
Yes but there were some who changed their vote because of the threat. I don’t know how many but I think it would have been much closer. It’s a scary precedent.
That is the same lawyer who advises the BoPC - wrongly. They swallow that too. It’s a big part of the whole mess of policing in this town. The late Harry Critchley tried to get an independent lawyer for the BoPC. They need one.

Re "I can't support a tax increase politicians", in the last few weeks, votes from Laura White and Virginia Hinch would result in most cost savings - by many multiple tens of millions of $.
Fillmore- the sole vote against the mental health crisis diversion pilot program. Truly, what kind of a person do you have to be to vote against that? Glad it passed. Kudos to all the community people who have been pushing for years.
