This is incredibly sad. The Doctor Who that he created was scientific fairy tales, and beautiful for it. Using bits of computer language where Douglas Adams would use silly made up terms - all block transfer computations and recursive occlusions - and somehow making it seem like poetry.

Of the many extremely weird guys to write for or script edit Doctor Who, Bidmead always managed to stand out for being just that little extra bit weirder. Also he liked TARDIS Eruditorum, so it’s doubly sad.

Very sad to hear this. Bidmead's science-fairy-tale season of Doctor Who is one of my all time favourites. He also said that he suggested Helen Mirren as the Fifth Doctor, but JNT went with the then-better-known Peter Davison instead.

That line of thought is a post-war rationalisation. The plan was to bomb Japan with everything they had until a ground invasion was ready, then invade. It wasn't either/or, it was everything and the kitchen sink until Japan surrendered.
Iain Coleman (@iaincoleman.bsky.social) reply parent
It was clear before the Yalta conference. Tbh, even in the counterfactual where the bomb is ready in time, it's not hard to see why Berlin itself would be an unlikely target by looking at a map. But who is the "they" you talk about, and when and where did they make this decision you describe?
Iain Coleman (@iaincoleman.bsky.social) reply parent
Alex Wellerstein discusses the evidence here, but the bottom line is that it was clear long before May 1945 that the war in Europe would be over before the bomb would be ready.
