I think ideology is overrated as a determining factor, and that other aspects of candidate quality matter more. All else being equal moderates will slightly outperform progressives, but I think a lot of voters would take a charismatic, authentic progressive over an insincere sounding moderate.

I think cynically chasing public opinion comes off to a lot of voters as inauthentic and soulless. People these days prefer a candidate who is charismatic and seems to say what they mean, so long as their opinions aren't *too* far outside the mainstream.

Immigration is great, but its also not a permanent solution because eventually every nation will fall below replacement birthrates. The timespan on this is pretty long though, plenty of time to use immigration as a stopgap while we figure out aging.

Profile picture Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent

The reason why falling birthrates are even a problem is because of the strain of supporting an aging population. Which points to a solution. If we can find ways to slow aging birthrates become moot, and it even becomes desirable to have lower birthrates.

He could not have foreseen the Haber process and green revolution that massively increased agricultural output. He did not know that birth control pills were possible. He could not know about the germ theory of disease, and how mass sanitation, vaccines, and antibiotics would change public health.

We're looking at the inverse of the situation that confronted the world Thomas Malthus lived in (~1800). Instead of trying to find ways of socially boosting birthrates, he was seeking ways of socially suppressing them to avoid overpopulation and the mass starvation and disease that came with it.

2/9/2025, 5:45:18 PM | 1 0 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent

Birthrates themselves aren't the true problem, it's taking care of an aging population that puts strains on societies. I don't think there's a social solution to this (immigration is a stopgap until all countries are below replacement fertility), but perhaps there's a technological one.

ok so the times witnessed reporters receiving cash from Adams people three times at mayoral events and sat on it for over a month but couldn’t pass up a hot tip from a neonazi about Mamdani’s unsuccessful college application for long enough to check if the neonazi had already been identified

May this portion of the dissent by Ketanji Brown Jackson haunt John Roberts forever and be the final word on his tenure as Chief Justice.

IDK how many ways she can keep saying the same thing. She's hoisting the red flag about as far as it's possible to hoist. A SCOTUS member is out there telling you the court is no longer a court of law.

So they're saying that it'd be bad if Congress passed a bill that increased the deficit by 4 trillion. Asking for no particular reason...

The 7 swing states (which the campaigns were actively contesting) swung less on average than the nation as a whole. That is not a sign of a bad campaign that fumbled the ball, but a good campaign that was fighting against insurmountable obstacles.

Not the nonsense Meloni proposes. If Ukraine can not join NATO, then Germany, Poland, France, Britain, or all of them, should stand up and formulate a military alliance outside of NATO.

MAGA elites view their voters as subjects/serfs. If a king grants clemency to a subject who petitions him, that's proof of his generosity, but he isn't obligated to. Supporting Trump is a one way street. You have obligations that bind you but no real protection. Trump has no obligation to you.

Its different, of course, for rich Trump supporters. They play the role of the aristocracy.

Its funny how the market is fine with all this. The problem with liberation day was that it was all at once. If Trump had announced the liberation day tariffs one country at a time over months everyone would have gotten used to the idea.

White woman puts Mexican flag on her truck to waste ICE’s time.

Scooby I am as white as a hotel towel, and the closest thing to Mexican I am was a single all inclusive resort stay in Cancun. I put a Mexican flag sticker on my old Tacoma abd was promptly pulled over by ICE in San Antonio. I'm happy to waste their time 1d RookaTX This is the way Scooby • RookaTX Their big question was like,

It would also save prematurely born babies. Yes, the technology (like any technology) could be used towards abusive ends. But we don't need artificial wombs to breed up indoctrinated children- many societies do that today.

An artificial womb would be an enormous advance for humanity in general and for women in specific, freeing them from the medical risks of pregnancy as well as some inconveniences. Stop letting your disgust reflex drive.
