Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
I think ideology is overrated as a determining factor, and that other aspects of candidate quality matter more. All else being equal moderates will slightly outperform progressives, but I think a lot of voters would take a charismatic, authentic progressive over an insincere sounding moderate.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
I think cynically chasing public opinion comes off to a lot of voters as inauthentic and soulless. People these days prefer a candidate who is charismatic and seems to say what they mean, so long as their opinions aren't *too* far outside the mainstream.

Immigration is great, but its also not a permanent solution because eventually every nation will fall below replacement birthrates. The timespan on this is pretty long though, plenty of time to use immigration as a stopgap while we figure out aging.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
The reason why falling birthrates are even a problem is because of the strain of supporting an aging population. Which points to a solution. If we can find ways to slow aging birthrates become moot, and it even becomes desirable to have lower birthrates.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
I think 200 years from now people will look back at us very similarly to how we looked at Malthus.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
He could not have foreseen the Haber process and green revolution that massively increased agricultural output. He did not know that birth control pills were possible. He could not know about the germ theory of disease, and how mass sanitation, vaccines, and antibiotics would change public health.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
We're looking at the inverse of the situation that confronted the world Thomas Malthus lived in (~1800). Instead of trying to find ways of socially boosting birthrates, he was seeking ways of socially suppressing them to avoid overpopulation and the mass starvation and disease that came with it.
Icefire9 (@icefire9atla.bsky.social) reply parent
Birthrates themselves aren't the true problem, it's taking care of an aging population that puts strains on societies. I don't think there's a social solution to this (immigration is a stopgap until all countries are below replacement fertility), but perhaps there's a technological one.
