all in order to draw a clean line. to rigidly define ourselves in opposition to the other. what matter if we lose collage, different ways of drawing, of writing, so long as we can tie ourselves to some ever changing goalpost that we *assure* ourselves AI cant reach (no matter how many times it does)
theres a million ways to write and a million ways to draw and a million ways to design and code and think and be and its so... depressing, seeing us collectively cut off anything outside of the Optimal Normal Technique, to cram art into a rigid box more effectively than any reactionary couldve
like theres tons of very impressive videos of artists, in person, if you need that in order to put down the pitchforks for a second, drawing what seems like nonsense until it all gets tied together into a clean finished product at the end. its impressive, and kind of a staple of ppl doing art on air
but now i see this urge to box ourselves in and cleanly delineate (and oh so assuredly cleverly spot) the Way Humans Do [creative thing]. "human artists work from primitive forms to finished, fake AI art process gifs seem to start with finished product in mind" we have literally seen artists do this
it makes me genuinely depressed. and this is/was something i had feelings on before the whole AI zeitgeist. i always LOATHED creative advice that boiled down to The Right Way To Do Things rather than a comparison of approaches, because human creativity is as old as humans. there isnt A Correct Way
the collapsing (and this isnt just happening with visual art but with creative work more broadly) of How Humans Create into a narrow category or technique, THIS is how humans draw, THIS is how humans write, FOR THE PURPOSE of trying to differentiate between human and AI produced works, is... sad
i think when i find it the most *frustrating* is when ppl who rail against AI art and talk abt it in extreme, moralizing terms all the time then get frustrated at all the witch hunts and false accusations happening and talking abt how theyre unwarranted and like. what were u expecting here
sure we might have to cape for intellectual property and cheer on copyright lawyers and do stupid ass witch hunts and share tips and tricks how to spot the Perfidious Machine and commit to misunderstanding how electricity usage works, but its all worth it for an ineffable sense of purity

it was, and is, unfulfilling work for as little pay and help as my employers could legally get away with providing to me. WHY am i meant to be mad at that kind of work being automated. i dont want to live in a society where we can improve these things but choose not to out of some puritan work ethic
and i had a fair few kind customers, some of them repeat customers! but ime, they did not come close to making up for how often i had to put up with being dehumanized, yelled at, blamed, condescended to, or otherwise mistreated by customers
but my reaction to that isnt that i want self checkout to go away, nor that i want AI to not come for those jobs, because i need to preserve the sanctity of my drudgework to pay my bills. the PROBLEM isnt the AI, the PROBLEM is that i have to do drudgework to justify my right to exist and be housed
but like, i worked the same retail job long enough to see half my coworkers replaced with self checkout, which i then had to help run, 6 lanes per employee. and i have no doubt that if/when/as AI gets better at it, id have been replaced as soon as that was feasible too. company has no loyalty to me

i am less interested in the absolute certainty, sanctity, and sole domain of consciousness than i am with the certainty that if that fuzzy threshold is ever crossed, there are wide swathes of ppl who have made it a core part of their worldview that anything too unlike us can never be truly conscious
