Viviz tonight in Charlotte, NC!! Waiting in the merch line now, and it looks like they still don’t have most of the clothing merch. They do have the jerseys, but I kinda doubt they’d fit me. 😅 #kpop #viviz #liveshows

I’ve seen people on here get pretty mad about pics with alt text. It also has a way longer character limit, so sometimes that’s the real post. 😆
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social)
Just the pens I took to work with me yesterday. I usually post these over on IG. (I don’t post as many pictures here because I never know what to put in the alt text. 🥴)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
That was in the case of some pens I got that had been left in a drawer with ink in them for a real long time. Decades. Ink is water-based, so it doesn’t really take more than that to clean them in normal situations.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, not Windex. Pen flush has a little ammonia in it, but a very small amount. I’ll add that if you can just soak the nib and feed that’s usually enough. I have just left a nib in a bit of water in a shot glass for a few days and it gradually he-hydrated the ink so I could flush it out.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
The ear ones are actually better than the nasal ones. They are bigger and more flexible so they’re easier to squeeze. Nasal are okay, but ear is superior.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Snatching a pen out of your hand is some wild behavior. I have a hard time imagining an adult doing that to me. 😵💫
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Or, you know, take actual photos of actual products instead of this AI junk. 🤷🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve used the red and green Infinity inks, and they’re pretty impressive at not drying out.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Nope. I use a variety of letter forms that I like, but I never write in full cursive. I dropped that in grade school and never went back.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I had Robert Oster’s Honeybee in that one for a while. It’s a pretty good match.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s always both with liquid inks. Performance is a combo of nib-paper-ink, and mismatches will feel bad or look bad.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Feeds are really the way to go here. Find the feeds for those fandoms you’re into and you’ll see lots of posts. And you can swipe across different feeds without having them all mixed into one list.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Medium is my go-to most of the time, too. It’s a solid size that’s useful for lots of things.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks! I appreciate it. 😄
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Good! That does look like a different ink, though.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Oops, I remembered incorrectly. I reviewed that ink back in 2014, and I wrote that it was on the wetter side and tended to bleed some. That was a long time ago, so I should try it again at some point.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I hope that combo works out for you. I usually find the Nahvalur Original nibs to be one the dry side, and I remember that ink being dry, too. Have you tried it yet?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I often think the Nahvur nibs (aside from the Nautilus-level ones) are kinda dry. The TWSBI 580s feel better to me. That particular one is a special edition, and it costs more. The typical 580 price is more like $55.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s a Zebra G nib on there. Those are really dip pen nibs, and they will always rust out like that. They’re not meant to be wet all the time. Definitely the metal’s fault and not the ink.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
(Short standard international cartridges, to be exact.)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Soaking the nib will do the trick, too, and creates even less waste. (Unless it’s like ebonite or something vintage.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
And they’re good people. Real small shop where everything is made in San Francisco.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Rickshaw makes these awesome sleeves and carrying cases with soft plush interiors Galen Leather makes some great hard-sided cases in leather and this one soft case that expands on the ends.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
If anyone asks just wink. 😉 They’re the ones being nosey. I’m curious why you’re using tissues to clean out a fountain pen, though…
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep. That’s what it is! This is a dip nib, and not a fountain pen nib, but it’s the same kind of idea.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
…and they still do!
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
The original Dark Violet was an LE, but the new one isn’t.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep! 👆🏼They can ALL be out-of-the-house-pens!
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
It depends one the pen and the ink, honestly. I use them a lot, but some brands (like Robert Oster) tend to be more cloggy, and some pens (like the TWSBI Eco) seem to be extra good at not clogging. A clog can be a little inconvenient, but it’s not really a big deal. Easily fixable.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah! I think you’re referring to the sheen! Shimmer is little particles of very fine glitter. Sheen is a property of some dyes used in ink making that can give a metallic sheen on top of the ink, or at the edges. Maureen is a sheener.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Lamy is sold all over in the USA. And $15 is a little higher than I usually see it. The 50ml glass bottles are usually more like $12. Still, I have to sell my 30ml plastic bottles of Diamine for at least $8, so not that much of a difference. 🤷🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Modern iron galls are still acidic, but they’re much tamer than the originals, so you can still use them with steel nibs. I wouldn’t leave them in the pen for years, but they’re usually fine.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Your Maureen has shimmer in it? I’m pretty sure mine doesn’t.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, that came from Papier Plume, too. My secret is that I use paraffin oil instead of alcohol. It works way better that way.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
You can get the wax separately for sure. I think it’s just the seals that were part of a pack.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I like their waxes a lot.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, that needs to be made. I sorta think they’ll make it as one of the “project” inks. Maybe under another name?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social)
This ink was a little too light for me, but I'm really glad they gave it a chance. #fountainpen
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
There are SO many good pen makers out there! Especially in the small-maker community. And lots of great stores and vendors, too. The bad ones are really the exception to the rule.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Orly took major heat the first time they did that, too. Wild to double-down like that.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, this looks just like if someone popped a Kaweco cap onto an Eco’s body. I have a version of this in brass that a friend sent me (since they know I wouldn’t buy one). I really think anyone familiar with those two pens would recognize what is going on there. 🤷🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t be mad at a company (or any designer) being upset that someone is using their designs without permission. It’s one of the big problems with AI art, and it’s always seemed weird to me that this community is real mad about AI art and largely ignores the copycats. 🤷🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Wasn’t the Kaweco thing that the time they got tired of Moonman copying their designs and trademarked the name somewhere so Moonman had to change their name?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry, didn’t mean to pen-splain. 😬 It’s just something that lots of people don’t know.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Love that Lightive! Such a cool color.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Fountain pen cleaners have a soap component, so it can make your ink run wetter if you don’t rinse them out really well after. That’ll lead to your lines looking wider on the page.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Sometimes I have to manually refresh the feeds on Bluesky by pulling down on the text. Looks normal on my end, tho.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
There are some awesome inks coming out of china from small makers like Hosia and Kitty Inkpot.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t like the Sailor ones nearly as much, either. You chose correctly! What’re the inks?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Those are great dip pens.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I also love these: amarillostationery.com/products/bsc...

A bit I wrote a couple years back:
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I have several of them, and I like them fine. They’re really big, and not as refined as a Pilot, but they’re also a much newer model and they’re very lightweight. (I have a video or two about them on my YouTube channel.)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I have affiliate codes and discounts for lots of them, too. They’re all in the descriptions of my YouTube videos. 👍🏼
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
🤷🏼♂️ I dunno. I think they just follow marketing trends, and thought some AI labels would be a hit.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
LOTS of great pen retailers out there. Atlas, SmrutiPens, Goldspot, Pen Boutique, Farney’s, Vanness, Shigure Inks, and the new Cardinal Pens are good folks. Brad’s PenAddict Podcast is good. Also check out Gourmet Pens Club.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Their pens aren’t good, but they do have a couple of inks that I really like. I’m just really disappointed about their use of AI and the HP kickstarter. 🙄
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep! My favorites are by Artifex Wax and Papier Plume. Artifex seems to be moving their store to Shopify right now, and the url is odd, but google will find them. (Just don’t buy hard wax if you’re intending to mail it.)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, the Carene is pretty flash all on its own! Love that pen.

Good for them! Glad to see them getting back in the game!

Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
That is real nice!
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yooooo…me too! 😆
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I absolutely did that live on a stream one time. Windows to the walls. 🤦🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
If the paper is garbage (and it is), what is drawing you to that notebook?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Working at a show does keep one out of SOME troubles. 😆 See you at Baltimore!
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I added “draw something” as a points redemption on Twitch, and people have been very kind about my silly drawings. 😆
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I hardly saw you at the show! These pens are awesome, and I wish I had spent more time at Bungubox because I’d have probably gotten one. 🤦🏼♂️
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep! There are a couple of people doing that really well.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Just tested positive this AM. It’s not great. ☹️🦠😷
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s good advice!
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
These are great disposables! I like the standard colors better than Varsity, even. (Varsity still has them beat on the non-standard colors, tho.)

Check out a decent video and enter to win a very cool fountain pen ink!

It’s like the Naginata-togi that Masuyama and Nagahara do, if you know those.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
There are lots of good black inks out there. I did a similar video a couple years back, and I look forward to seeing what you picked. I’ve really been liking the Dr PH Martin’s Dark Matter black. It’s pigmented and very well-behaved. www.docmartins.com/products/oce...
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Neat! It looks like their “natural” starts off way warmer than my Galen leather “undyed” stuff. My Paper Republic is a dark green, and has also aged really well.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I love mine, too. There’s just something so satisfying about how it feels, and it’s the brain child of a couple of my favorite people.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
Is the ink black, or sorta blue? If you got the drier ink and an EF it would be a bad combo. 😬
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
That orange leather cover looks great. What kind is it?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
What kind of “stopped working” did they do? Do they start back up if you put a couple of drops of water on the nib?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not that they suck, but one of the colors is really dry. I want to say it’s the blue or blue black?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd love that. Excellent names! 😆
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I got samples of Arsenic Green, Night Shade, and Verdigris from a friend.
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I got some samples of your inks this weekend!

Are you curious about what the DC Fountain Pen Show was like? I did a live tour on Friday and talked to lots of the vendors. You can find it here:
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
OR: soak and use one of the bulb syringes. I cut off the back of a Lamy cartridge to stick the bulb’s nozzle into and make that connection better. Also, often just a little bit of tap water on the nib can revive a dried out pen. Hot water and spit aren’t great for fountain pens. (Melting and 🦠.)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m glad your pen is working, but: It’s easier and safer to just let your Lamy pen’s nib and grip section soak in a cup of room temp water and then use the converter to push water through it until it’s clear.

They posted some right wing stuff on main a while ago. Also, pens are generally not-good from what I hear. I think their store is in a strip-mall church or something? Kinda weird. www.reddit.com/r/fountainpe...

I guess one bonus to switching to pencils is that any old notebook will work fine with graphite. Or are there some that just don’t play well with them?
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
(This hasn’t happened to me in literal decades, so not a common occurrence.)
Mike (@inkdependence.bsky.social) reply parent
