Reducing restrictions on producing oil does not involve a taxpayer-funded bailout of refineries. On the contrary, it would quite a lot of generate tax revenue for the state. More in-state oil production means lower input costs for refineries which means higher margins which means more taxable income
Shae von Londinium (@intrepidbrit.bsky.social) reply parent
But if the refineries are going to use oil anyway, why pay red states for that oil? Wouldn’t a better solution be to have those dollars flow into our state coffers? Said dollars can be used to accelerate the buildout of electricity public transportation and re-instate the state EV credit for example
Shae von Londinium (@intrepidbrit.bsky.social) reply parent
But it need not be forever. I’m not saying we need to build more refineries, which have decades-long operating lives. I’m saying we can supply the existing ones with in state oil for a period of time whilst keeping all the same climate policies (including cap and trade) in place.
Shae von Londinium (@intrepidbrit.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m coming around to the idea that California should allow more in-state oil production and refining. More corporate & gas tax revenue, more cap and trade revenue, and more stable gas prices which will help address cost of living for a lot of people. Doesn’t mean we need to abandon our climate goals
