Sounds like your main problem is trying to be one country when the drawbacks far exceed the benefits. Europe might have an EU but each country is still their own country. If all of Europe tried to unify like the US it would be just as screwed up.

There is no paradise to be found in this world. We can only acknowledge our flaws and failures, and try to do better than those who came before. Things are improving here though, slowly but surely. The US is self-destructing though and we are in the damage zone.

The US is too big and sprawling and filled with deep regional divisions. It is far easier to have consensus in a fairly small country that is quite tightly-knit. The US can't agree on what it is or what it stands for.

The main conservative party of Canada (CPC) can't afford to alienate a large portion of it's voter base so they ride the line. The extreme far right party (PPC) holds those views bust Canada's demographics means they will stay a fringe.

Most of Canada is uninhabitable or only habitable in low density (such as the Indigenous populations who have lived in those areas for over 10 thousand years). Canada is just fine the way it is, tyvm.

That was the US. Canada is a harsh and rugged place and has always attracted certain types of immigrants to face the many challenges of survival here. Nothing bonds people together quite like living somewhere with a low margin of error for survival that needs people to look out for each other.

Canada has been doing this for a long time and it works pretty well. These aren't the frontier days of settlers and homesteading, where people were pretty much on their own once they got here. Life has gotten a lot more complicated.

Most asylum seekers have wanted to go to the US and only recently are looking to Canada as the preferred option. The US advertises to the world with film, television, and other media and has for a very long time. The so-called "American Dream" and the Statue of Liberty calls to many.

Some social housing estates like they built in the UK in the years after the war might help. As long as the residents are a good mix of different types who need subsidised housing so they don't end up like The Projects of the US... Working class, seniors, those with disabilities, younger people.

I think you nailed why things are changing when you mentioned the scale of it that is coming. The potential scale is enough to put a lot of people into survival mode and support/vote for whoever will prevent that from happening. Getting people out of survival mode is not an easy task.

So our enemies have lots of nukes and we have few. That doesn't sound like it worked out all that well to me.
