Sounds like your main problem is trying to be one country when the drawbacks far exceed the benefits. Europe might have an EU but each country is still their own country. If all of Europe tried to unify like the US it would be just as screwed up.

No more Kid gloves. You do not get credit for nebulous intentions of perhaps doing something someday. Rise to meet this moment while you still can.

You are running out of time because there won't be much left to salvage once trump and his regime are done.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
I am willing to acknowledge the faults of my country, are you willing to acknowledge the faults of yours?
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Who the hell is saying it's perfect? Canada is not perfect, not even close. Canada is not a paradise either. The world is not black and white and treating it that way is setting yourself up for failure.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
There is no paradise to be found in this world. We can only acknowledge our flaws and failures, and try to do better than those who came before. Things are improving here though, slowly but surely. The US is self-destructing though and we are in the damage zone.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
You are a country that is split in two and ever battling for control. Oil & water and whatever it was that allowed the two halves to bind together is long gone.

War is coming and quickly too... the preparations are well underway.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
The US is too big and sprawling and filled with deep regional divisions. It is far easier to have consensus in a fairly small country that is quite tightly-knit. The US can't agree on what it is or what it stands for.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
It is a sign of civilizational collapse.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
The cars were a division that was sold off. They used to advertise the cars as being from a company that made fighter jets, it was even in the commercials.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Saab still produces fighter jets even if they don't produce cars anymore.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
When the AMOC collapses somehow I don't think that will be the case.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
We are lucky in that we changed immigration rules that prioritised certain demographics many decades ago and have embraced being a cultural mosaic.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
The main conservative party of Canada (CPC) can't afford to alienate a large portion of it's voter base so they ride the line. The extreme far right party (PPC) holds those views bust Canada's demographics means they will stay a fringe.

Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
It turns out that the US government is held together by expectations of people adhering to certain standards. Once someone is powerful enough and they start breaking rules there is just no way to hold them accountable.

Most of Canada is uninhabitable or only habitable in low density (such as the Indigenous populations who have lived in those areas for over 10 thousand years). Canada is just fine the way it is, tyvm.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely isn't an easy process. You may have better luck looking into your ancestry if you have grandparents who immigrated.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Venezuela would be even worse. There's a reason so many people flee from there.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Canada has a good sized population for a country with as harsh a climate as it has and the geographic features it has. The US however exists in the sweet spot, or at least a lot of it does.

That was the US. Canada is a harsh and rugged place and has always attracted certain types of immigrants to face the many challenges of survival here. Nothing bonds people together quite like living somewhere with a low margin of error for survival that needs people to look out for each other.
Isen Siel (@isensiel.bsky.social) reply parent
Canada has been doing this for a long time and it works pretty well. These aren't the frontier days of settlers and homesteading, where people were pretty much on their own once they got here. Life has gotten a lot more complicated.
