Is Canada open to take in American political refugees? Serious question. There's apparently an uptick in ppl going there and claiming asylum, but will it be granted?

Nobody wants Americans. There's no way to make sure they aren't afflicted with the extreme right disease. Nobody wants just one getting in and infecting others. I know if I were them I sure as hell wouldn't risk it.
Yeah...we fled in 2022 since we could see the writing on the wall. I was asking for a friend. Most Americans could not afford to move to another state, much less another country so they're not gonna flood into Canada. My friend in Victoria says there's a scarily large maga contingent in Canada.😕
Uh oh. That is VERY bad news.
You can apply but refugee status wouldn’t apply. You had a democracy and voted it out. More people voted for TFG than Harris. Nothing we can do about that. You are not in imminent danger.
Darn
Goodness...I've got a brain so we fled in 2022. I'm asking for progressive friends in the south with a gay child.
We have loosened some restrictions for gay and trans folks. But they would still have to apply and it takes a long time.
The Carney government seems to be more hostile to immigrants and asylum claimants than even the Trudeau government was, and Trudeau was pretty bad on this file.
Problem is Canada doesn:t have the capacity
The US has 10 times the population that Canada has.
Yes, we should, but the infrastructure is NOT able to support an influx of asylum seekers or immigrants. Our healthcare systems; our schools; our housing shortage crisis — these are strained and stressed for Canadian citizens and the permanent residents who are already here. Where to put people????
VERY limited.
If someone's a HEALTHCARE worker from the U.S., they're wanted, and some provinces are fast-tracking them for licensure to practice/work, acquiring jobs, and then speeding up the process of Permanent Residency application processing. British Columbia is one of those provinces doing so.
Immigration Canada has a Comprehensive Ranking System to "score" potential candidates for consideration.
If an American is young, financially capable of supporting themselves, has a profession sought by the Canadian job market: they might be considered for permanent residency, but must apply for such, and it's a slow, expensive process. No guarantee.
It helps if you learn French.
No, because of the Safe Third Country Agreement! Also, Canada has cut way back on immigration, because we currently don't have the infrastructure to support more immigrants or asylum seekers—housing, medical care, and financial support = not available.
Isn't Carney trying to build more
Bill C-2 has changed Immigration and Asylum Seeking in Canada.
Just because people attempt to claim asylum in Canada doesn't mean they're allowed to stay or will be approved! If Canada doesn't have adequate infrastructure for CANADIANS and established, permanent residents, first, there is NO MEANS to support immigration or the huge needs of asylum seekers.
The creation of adequate infrastructure for to meet the needs and demands of CANADIANS will take time to build, establish, and balance. It doesn't happen overnight; it will take at least a year or two to begin to see progress, with steps required to get there. It goes to Canadians in need first.
One doesn't buy shoes for the neighbours' kids, if one can't afford to buy shoes for one's own kids first! From October, before Trump and Carney, 🇨🇦 already announced cutbacks in immigration. Carney has confirmed this.
Yes, but for CANADIANS, first! The infrastructure is for CANADIANS and established residents, who require, deserve, and pay into having infrastructure. Once those needs are met, balanced, THEN we're able to help others who MIGHT come to Canada.
