Meanwhile the discussions are pointed and absurd. I'd go so far as to reimagine today's most absurd ppl and their ideological discussions. Channel the epically stupid conspiracy theories and let them breathe at this ultra chaotic event that bumrushes the couple as if it were ridiculous therapy. 😁
Relevant to the discussion at hand. The neighbors dog gets loose, the couple discover two of their friends cheating on each other in the back room, a woman at the party comes onto the guy and his woman sees it, etc until the parties over, the madness settles, and the couple decide to stay together.
Most of the story takes place on the back patio where the adults smoke. Kids play in the yard. A delivery is made, it's something embarrassing a sex swing perhaps, it's not what she ordered, she's on the phone in the kitchen trying to straighten the order out. Occasionally she says something
Off the top of my head, a couple are fighting in a car outside a kids' birthday party in the back yard of a friend's house. They're extremely close to breaking up. Their life is too chaotic to stay together, but they'll decide after they smile and attend the event.

It'd be at least half dialog which means there needs to be a plethora of strong characters and constant activity similar to the best of sitcoms where there's no chance to calm the emotions before the reader is hit again and again. Could be real fun to craft and interweave. 😇

I wrote down a title once, Lies and Cigarettes. It invokes a time where I listened far off to the side to a cluster of ladies all discussing conspiracy this and that while smoking on the patio. There's definitely a great story there if done right.

#writingcommunity, if you haven't attempted a #pastiche, I recommend you do so. It's a "What if?" on an already established story so small challenge there, but mimicking the style is truly an experience. Imitating Stoker, given the "rules" from then to now, was very fun and unlike anything me.
Agreed! Language is also huge aspect. Not just accent but alternate words like South Africa's 'robot' for a street light. In Between Neon and The Light, I got to blend common languages into a new parlance. Spanish Red for internet, Javascript Node for phone, Japanese Tabe for food for example.

I write the tedious bits down in my notes and trim them down when I write. I believe it lends consistency that otherwise would be missed. I know character X can't afford those shoes and I know how she got them, no need to mention the rest of her outfit notated, but the shoes are intriguing. 😉
