That must be tough to reconcile for you then. Because it is exactly those who decided to return who chose to engage in ethnic cleansing to make the land exclusively theirs. Other major Jewish centers (NYC being the prime example) have prospered because they chose to integrate with those around them.
A presence, sure, but not really significant for most of the past 2000 years. By the end of the 19th century, there were between 20-40k Jews living in Palestine out of a population of ~5mil. That works out to less than 1%. For comparison, there were 500k living in NYC out of ~3.5mil, or about 17%.

It makes it much harder when everybody is affected. That's why they're going after Medicaid, but not SS or Medicare. Their constituents would be in the streets at even a whiff of those being threatened, but since Medicaid hides behind state-named agencies, they're currently able to sneak it through.
