If you want to find out more about 'Communion: A Queer Christian Zine', how it came into being, and how to share it with your own community, then you can go to stnicholasleicester.com/magazine

The front cover of Communion a queer Christian zine, with a collage of a painting of a saint juxtaposed with a sketch of a nude man, reaching out What is 'Communion: A Queer Christian Zine'? 'Communion' is a 'Zine' or magazine affirming LGBT+ Christianity in all it's weird and wonderful holiness. It has been created as part of the mission of St Nicholas Church in Leicester. The intention for the zine is for it, like Communion itself, to be shared and offered to all who wish to take it -especially those with whom Christ would have been condemned for feeding, for those are the most worthy of all. With that in mind it has been created with an ethos of grassroots community organising and radical sharing, meaning that not only is it completely free to the person reading it, it's also free for anyone to print and distribute. More specific information about this, and the files you need to enable that sharing, can be found lower down this page. Why does this zine exist? St Nicholas Church has been welcoming and affirming LGBT+ people since the 1960's, and has long been known as an 'LGBT+ Sanctuary Church', offering a spiritual home and pastoral support to those who needed it. Because of this we have, for many years, had a presence at Leicester Pride, offering pastoral support and an affirming and celebratory presence for those who need it. This is often a surprise for people who have never encountered LGBT+ inclusive Christianity before, and Pride isn't really the place for those deep conversations they want to have (especially when we're given a stall near the loud main stage), so this zine was originally conceived as an attempt to remedy that by offering people an opportunity to explore a multitude of different experiences, ideas, and perspectives from across the broad spectrum of LGBT+ inclusive Christian theology and belief. WELCOMΕ ΤΟ COMMUNION A QUEER CHRISTIAN ZINE Whether you're Christian or not, LGBTQIA+ or not, an expert in queer theology, or completely new to the idea of affirming Christianity, we hope you'll find something to interest you in this issue. We have pieces on ministering in London during the AIDS crisis, advice for Queer Christian stu-dents, academic research on transgender people in medieval hagiography, a feature on bums in Christian art, and so much more. There's even a cryptic crossword! This zine has been created as part of Nicholas Church in the mission of St Leicester. At 1100+ years old St Nicholas is one of the ten oldest churches in the UK it's also an LGBTQIA+ inclusive church, and has been for well over half a century. We believe that queer people have a place in the Christian church, that queerness itself is a gift from God to be celebrated, and that there is no conflict between being LGBTQIA+ and the Christian faith. A Saint looks up from his prayers to discover he's been dead for some time For St Robert of Knaresborough From The Vanishing Song By Jay Hulme After he retired to the cave prayer grew in him like a forest, sowed its seeds inside his psyche, rewilded his heart. He didn't see that centuries had passed without him. One day he looked up, hearing requests for intercession, and the woods were older than expected, the riverbanks shifted by the years - and as he knelt before the altar in his hermit's church, his knees disappeared below the edges of his emptied grave.

The shrine of St Decumanus was destroyed during the Reformation, and now all that remains is a medieval stone plinth in the north transept, decorated with a neat row of small quatrefoils. 8/8

Love to discover that the Lemkin Institute (which identifies nations taking steps towards genocide in an attempt to recognise and prevent it) has issued the UK with a Red Warning for Genocide because of recent law changes around transgender people. This problem of Schroedinger's Reserved Sacrament leads to some interesting theological questions, like: Should we genuflect? Because it's probably best to err on the side of caution and assume Jesus is in and genufley... but if he's not... does that then become idolatrous?

Someone has stolen the key to the Aumbry at church. Until the locksmith breaks into it we don't know if they also stole the reserved sacrament or not. Which means that currently we have Schroedinger's Reserved Sacrament. Until we can confirm it either way, Jesus both IS and IS NOT in there.

There was also a big open letter criticizing Boyne's inclusion signed by other authors (not on the longlists), including several prominent names. In summary, I really didn't see evidence that an online outcry was the motivating force. A few people responded negatively to Boyne's inclusion...

It's this principled decision to withdraw as a judge, by Dunin, that seems to have been key. It brought more attention to the selection of Boyne, which led to both an increase in negative comments and the withdrawal by three more authors. Once three authors and a judge had withdrawn, more followed.

see the terfs will all claim that polari has been cancelled by the 'trans mob' or whatever but the first i heard of this mess was *after* authors, and judges, had started pulling out. they simply can't accept that they're a tiny, but incredibly vocal, minority with a lot of institutional power.

The Polari Prize has been "Paused"

Statement (18.08.2025) Polari is part of the LGBTQ+ writing and reading community and for fifteen years, trans, gender non- conforming and non-binary people have been part of that community - at our events, on our judging panels, on our long and short lists and among our prize winners. This commitment to inclusion remains unchanged. Polari is not and has never been a trans exclusionary organisation. These are not our values and we condemn all forms of transphobia. What was supposed to be a celebration of exceptional LGBTQ+ literature has been overshadowed by hurt and anger, which has been painful and distressing for all concerned and we apologize to everyone who has been affected. Many discussions have been undertaken over the last two weeks -with authors, judges, stakeholders, and funders - about the impacts and ramifications of the longlisting of John Boyne's novel and how we can learn from this experience and move forwards. We have decided as a result to pause the prize this year while we increase representation of trans and gender non-conforming judges on the panels for all the awards and undertake a governance and management review to include our aimns and values and work to better support everyone within our LGBTQ+ Polari community. We have already secured strong representation for next year, which we will build on. We will also explore discussions about the tensions between the claims of freedom of expression and the need to create inclusive and supportive spaces in a world hostile to our trans community members and our community at large. We extend our heartfelt apologies to everyone affected this year, for the disappointment and despair this has caused. We acknowledge the ongoing support of the Polari community. everyone we have consulted, and our hugely supportive partners. We are a tiny operation that has run on goodwill and small pots of funding and sponsorship for 15 years and will endeavour to find a way forwards in good faith.
