Gamedev peeps! You should go give Soupy a follow! Fantastic designer from OG Infinity Ward/Respawn; he made Rust in COD MW2 (2009), he made Into the Abyss (the factory level) in Titanfall 2 (among other things), he's done a GDC talk (youtu.be/CkHGuHd9BgU), and he somehow has under 100 followers here

Looks like someone in the community wrote a custom integration for Bluesky last year, but it only looks at Bluesky and doesn't even have feature parity with the Mastodon integration: github.com/ScreamingToa...
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
It's very similar to IFTTT but FOSS, self-hosted, and much more flexible. You can write very complicated automations using YAML For example, the Mastodon integration exposes your total following, followers, and posts, updated hourly. You can use it to automatically make posts if you wanted to
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Ah, so Home Assistant already is a service in the background (although you typically use a Raspberry Pi for it). It "talks" to different services and connects them to one another. For example, "Blink my office lights when I get a work email". It also optionally can expose sensors for dashboards
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
I just wish there was a way to avoid IFTTT as a service. I stopped using them the day they started to paywall everything. ...I wonder if @home-assistant.io has an ATproto integration nowadays? I know they have some stuff for Mastodon

When that song was first released, management freaked out and tried to ban skippers from making jokes about how much they hate their jobs, haha. Technically the rule is still on the books but it's probably one of the most broken rules in the skipper rulebook

Some memorable films: * The Jungle Cruise A-lead did a shot-for-shot remake of "Never Gonna Give You Up". Includes blooper where Anaheim PD asked what he was doing * A trainer left Disney to become a realtor IRL, so he made a film where he sold the Jungle Cruise (complete with "For Sale" sign)

Fun fact: every year, there is a skipper event called the "Golden Mics". It's a night where the skips all get together after hours and celebrate being skippers. Usually involving silly short films, awards (of course), and every year there is also a sing-along to Skipper Dan

Whenever you posted anything on the subreddit, it would be auto-removed. Then if the mod liked what you posted, they would repost it on their account and farm karma off your link. They had a few million karma. They also banned words like "Florida" and anything that criticized Gavin Newsom

I am so glad that the mod (singular) of the California subreddit was finally kicked out. It was them and a sockpuppet they ran that were the mods of a ton of subreddits. All the other mods listed had no perms and couldn't do anything. Reddit admins finally got wise to it and kicked him off the team

That law is the law of the land. There was no legislation passed that repealed it. There is no court ruling against it. By not to enforce it, Newsom is effectively ruling as a dictator. And it gets brushed under the rug because "who cares?" But when he's President, we will all suffer

Mastodon doesn't have this issue - but only because each Mastodon instance is a server run by a human in their basement, basically. If privacy is your goal, using Mastodon may be a thought - you'd just need to trust the one person who owns the hard drive your posts live on
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
This is why there's (currently) no private accounts. Even DMs are technically implemented "off-protocol"; i.e. they're a temporary stand-in until the real on-protocol system can be built. You have to assume everything you share is open and posted forever.
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Bluesky is designed from the ground-up to be billionaire-proof. It is designed such that if Elon bought the site, other people can make their own Bluesky and it would be identical. Part of that means that it's difficult to have truly private data, because then Bluesky is the only place with the keys
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
You can look at the Bluesky firehose itself and see every post on the network, no matter what: blueskyhose.rickt.dev There's almost certainly somebody archiving all of them. You can see delete requests too, so you can theoretically make a Bluesky appview that only shows deleted posts
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Technically the "only allow logged-in users to see my posts" is a suggestion, not a rule. I think Bluesky itself even mentions that. The reason being that anyone can host their own Bluesky relay, and if they did so they'd need to know your post existed so they can let people using the relay see it

Here are the same charts, but with gold. You see the same behavior - up 34.09% in USD, up 27.41% in EUR. The percentage is higher in USD because the USD is losing value. Note the spike in USD in April when rich people started getting worried about the US economy
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me)
This is actually a really bad sign for Americans. Ethereum is going up because the US Dollar is losing value. Compare these charts. Ethereum went up 27.8% in Europe but 44.4%(!) in the US. That's the dollar going down. I'm no crypto fan; you see it in gold, too. It's just easier to see with crypto
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
I am no fan of crypto myself, but it's important to know that this is happening and why it's happening, rather than dismissing it out of hand
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Compare these 2 charts. ETH went up by 27.8% if you measure in Euros, but by almost double that (44.4%!) if you measure in dollars. This is because the dollar is now worth less than it was early this year. It takes more dollars to buy the same thing, since people are losing trust in the dollar
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Right now the price is rising because so many people are afraid to have dollars in their bank account with the worries about the US economy and possible mass inflation. You also see the price of gold going up. But if the value of the dollar goes DOWN, crypto/gold will (theoretically) stay constant
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Rich folk have a lot of dollars, and one easy way to get rid of dollars is by selling them in exchange for cryptocurrency. You're also seeing rich people using dollars to buy gold; same concept. As the dollar gets weaker, the price of crypto will go up for Americans but stay the same for Europeans
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Cryptocurrency is now also being used by banks, especially banks that don't want to have a lot of dollars. The US economy is doing badly, which usually moves people to buy US government debt. But people now think the US won't pay back that debt, which is causing the dollar to be worth less
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
So what this is basically saying is that Ethereum as an alternative to Bitcoin is doing well. It's still a cryptocurrency, and it's still basically gambling as it has no value other than what other people agree it has. Bitcoin is also doing well, FWIW, largely because Nazis love cryptocurrency
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Basically, you don't need a fancy GPU to mine ETH anymore - you just need to own ETH already and be willing to use it to help out the network by basically double-checking receipts, like at the exit to Costco. In exchange for double-checking these receipts, you get paid a small amount of ETH
Jay Stevens (@jaystevens.me) reply parent
Ethereum (or ETH) is a cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin (BTC). The main difference is that ETH can be programmed in ways that BTC can't. You can program contracts that force ETH to be used a certain way (this led to NFTs). ETH also now doesn't use as much power as BTC, as of 2022
