It's absolutely wild that so many athletes don't have the awareness to realize that, while at events, everything they say and do is being recorded. Both by the plethora cameras and mics from the media, and everybody in the crowd with a smart phone

Kyrgios is also a sore loser and his "passion" leads to people being hit.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
The guy has literally been on record saying he doesn't work out.

Him and Kyrgios are seriously such blights on a pretty fantastic to watch sport otherwise.

but the state reimburses the company for build costs - 20% of wages. So while it may provide a short stimulus boost to the local area, it comes at the cost of more taxpayer dollars.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
And the longterm incentive doesn't kick in for 20 years on Use/Sales, 12 for Property tax. Meanwhile, they crush the environment around them and drive up energy costs for the whole state.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
That's the core question. It would make some level of sense if it was a factory that employed hundreds/thousands. But most Data Centers have like 20 employees, half of them maintenance/cleaning crews with modest at best wages. There's little to no short term tax incentive.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
all while employing less than 30 people in most of them
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
Local/State Governments need to start rethinking their massive subsidization of data centers. It's simply not worth it. abcnews.go.com/Technology/w... Data Centers in Illinois don't pay Sales or Use tax for 20 years, get tax credits for building, and pay 40% of market rate on property tax.

Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah it's not surprising that there's fish in the water, but I'm concerned that the league is going to partner themselves into situations they can't get out of. It's so much easier to negotiate your worth between 1 other party and not 40/50/whatever it ends up being.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
I actually think all the private investment is bad for the players. The NBA is owned in whole by 30 owners(hip groups). The WNBA is 42% owners, 42% NBA, 16 private equity. Remove the external groups as soon as possible and give the team owners full stake. It'll result in higher player pay.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
The new CBA and media deal will result in huge increases for players. And once owners are able to pull back 40% of league ownership from the NBA, the players will have more leverage. At current, there's 3 interested parties, with one propping up the league.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
That's the second time you've linked that article that bases its entire argument around Walt Fraziers outlier contract and attempting to justify disparate revenue arguments with inflation. It's hack journalism. Should WNBA players be paid more? Yes of course - when the revenue is there.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah so the numbers are fake. That's the line of logic you're going with. Glad to know I don't need to continue this conversation anymore.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
The NBA's revenue in 1965 was 32~ million. Average player salary was 8,000. That's not a typo. That's .02% of the revenue. WNBA average was 102k in 2022 on 200m in revenue - .04%. Literally double. Do your research before making bold claims.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
So net worth means nothing here. Glad we've got that out of the way. The league lost 50m last year. You want them to lose more?
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
That's nice. How do you pay players in theoretical net worth?
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
They have - www.wnbpa.com
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
To be fair, the league has *never* turned a profit and is heavily subsidized by the NBA. Really hard to give large pay increases across the board when you're underwater financially.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
If they're able to negotiate a 50/50~ split similar to the NBA, average salary would be 2.4m
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
I know it's bad in Nashville when I see that, know it's Manhattan, and think - That seems reasonable!
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent

Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
In the formal, competitive formats, it's one on one. But there are formats that introduce more players. They're typically seen as more casual formats.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
You also have stuff like risk management - when to be aggressive or controlling (there's actually a pretty famous article based on this specific notion from 26 (good lord) years ago.
Jed Dolbeer (@jdolbeer.bsky.social) reply parent
Based on generally accepted "best versions" of best decks in any given format. So there's tons of variables and deduction, altering play based on opponent or opponent deck etc.
