Repubs overturned Roe v Wade because they fought harder and dirtier when it seemed hopeless for them and Dems took the status quo for granted. There are plenty of battles that are losing in the short run but if you fight tooth and nail and rally the base, they can be winning in the long run.

Assault weapons are inherently a superficial / political designation based on random features like barrel shrouds, flash suppressors, and accessory attachment points. A non-superficial ban would be one on all rifles or semi rifles or something like that. But that's not what's being proposed.

I don't know what the answer is but an AWB is illogical because it's based on superficial features. The same gun models like ARs are available in AW and non-AW versions, with only cosmetic differences, and both shoot the same. And AWs are used in a small minority of gun crimes.
