My program went on to lose the bulk of its funding under Obama austerity cuts. Obama was particularly interested in cutting study of the former USSR. He cut study for Russian shortly before Russia invaded Crimea. So while Trump is the bulldozer, both parties have long been annihilating education.
I doubt FLAS will return, but it should. I never worked for the govt or sought to. FLAS was just a way to pay for my education and do research in an understudied region. AI language learning does NOT replace the real deal, and FLAS was how students like me with no money could get advanced degrees.
My MA in Central Eurasian Studies was funded by FLAS fellowships. I studied Uzbek. Then I used my knowledge of Uzbekistan to predict that the US would turn into an authoritarian kleptocracy that does things like cut the FLAS fellowships. In horrific ways, it was an undeniably useful education.
