The truth of this has been diluted from post-Reconstruction, and people have yet to face the truths behind the rebellion against Union. It was about white supremacy, and the monuments and symbols are the talismans of it's resurrection, ever present, frozen in time. It's time to let this go.

Johnson was a tool, but it ended with the election of 1876, well after his term ended.
