Retired teacher, teacher educator. Now a part-time doctoral student and blog editor. Also a keen hobby woodworker who spends far too much of his pension on new woodworking kit 😁. No DMs thanks.

Doctoral research is demanding, but so much growth happens when we stop and reflect on the process itself. In my latest Slow Lane Boomer post, I introduce ARC-R: my way of structuring reflection through Awareness, Reframing, Commitment, and Resilience. #PhDSky jluker.substack.com/p/when-resil...

When a gangster calls in debts, the answer is unity. Allies don’t need Trump’s blessing - just to stop him blocking the table. Even that’s a win. #Ukraine #Allies

Trump’s sudden pressure on Zelenskyy feels less like “policy” and more like desperation. In gangster politics, when the tone shifts from transactional to manic, it usually means the boss has called in a debt. Something may be breaking behind the scenes.

My first attempt at a Substack article: When the sirens stayed silent. Why Britain’s civilian readiness is lagging behind — and what we can learn from neighbours who are already preparing for air and drone threats. substack.com/home/post/p-...

Fear is understandable but fear of what? How much attention do you give to speakers when you are in the audience? The audience will be thinking mostly about themselves and 10-20% about you if you are lucky. Anyone paying attention wants you to succeed, so enjoy the moment, scan the room and smile 🙂

#EduSky #PhDSky Several years ago when teaching MA Ed research methodology modules I’d try to explain “paradigm shift” in terms of aliens landing on Earth and our knowledge of life in the universe. It is much easier now since 20th January 2025 😂. Beam me up Scotty - please!

🙏 they have gamed the consequences of these tariffs, which may be significant and rapid in the U.S. If the worst case scenarios pan out, a big if, and the U.S. implodes then the U.K.’s international relations will change beyond all recognition. Consider 5 👀 just for starters. I’d be wary too.

For us rural folks where the nearest shop is a car drive away - not a problem 😁
John Luker (@johngl.bsky.social) reply parent
AI would have replied: “Full-spectrum tariffs will collapse your economy.” Not the answer they would have wanted 😂
John Luker (@johngl.bsky.social) reply parent
To paraphrase those who understand these things: The road to systemic collapse is paved by simple solutions to complex problems. My guess is that history will see this moment for the US as akin to the fall of Rome 🙄

Zotero for MA. Mendeley for EdD. As the thesis doc got bigger back again to Zotero for better integration with thematic tagging and citation logging, greater control over data storage, all of which align with the reflexive, ethically grounded practices expected in close-to-practice doctoral work.

Sadly these types of stories are not new. Why did the awarding university not flag the high rate of non-completion by students for these programmes? What about programme oversight? Not to mention periodic partnership reviews between the university and the franchisees. So many red flags here!

Suggest you write a reflective statement that summarises your thoughts and see where that takes you. It’s a journey and how you reflect on that journey demonstrates your growth in academic thought and skills. Include an action plan if you can. Your supervisors do want you to succeed. 🤞

Maybe, just maybe Zelensky was well briefed? “If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant.” (Sun Tzu Chapter 6: Weak Points and Strong)

Another new BELMAS Blog post #BELMASblog www.belmas.org.uk/blog/the-imp... Do we understand the leader as a heroic individual accomplishment, or as a networked ecological process?

Oh so true! Saw this in the comments section of today’s FT and it struck home with me in these strange times: "The less talent they have, the more pride, vanity and arrogance they have. All these fools, however, find other fools to applaud them" Erasmus 1509. #StrangeTimes

Used to set first year undergrad education students a small group task (FOFO) to research the evidence for MI and other general learning styles theories commonly touted in the early 2000s. Needless to say the group presentations were a good chance for them to critique learning styles theories 😂

Many faculty staff have heavy workloads and AI is the new reality for now. Create your own AI persona to critique your work against the module LOs and marking rubric. YouTube has some great sources on ChatGPT and creating persona. AI is a good tool but a bad master and that’s how I use it.

Not sure what your focus is here Matt but one of the most impressive AI tools I’ve seen recently is Storm by Stanford University. The level and accuracy of citations is good. No hallucinations or just fabricating stuff seen in other AI tools. storm.genie.stanford.edu

Let me know if it works. I expect it will. You can always let the AI know in detail what you want it to do and it will suggest the best prompts to use. It’s incredible really 🤔
John Luker (@johngl.bsky.social) reply parent
Have you tried using AI? Tell the AI that you want it to adopt the persona of an expert journal editor and proof reader. Put both article versions into the AI as pdf files. Ask the AI to do a detailed comparison of the two and then produce a single list of only changes of the in-text citations. 🤞

If you are able to arrange any group work then I would thoroughly recommend using Jenny Moon’s reflective writing exercise “The Park”. cetl.org.uk/UserFiles/Fi... Great for understanding reflective writing and a step towards a meta cognitive approach to academic writing.
