The first in a series, The Ebert Cantos, found poems consisting solely of unbroken fragments from Roger Ebert’s movie reviews. No AI in sight.

CANTO I He lives alone, in what looks like a rented apartment, bookshelves on the walls. He puts himself to sleep with a metronome. Smug. Self-satisfied. writ large against the steppes a slight touch of paralysis now and again, He plays a deformed village idiot He embodies Evil. Not even a fat man buys that much tomato sauce. = From his window, he sees hooded figures carrying corpses to a charnel-pit; he is called to the bedside of a dying woman there were pines and larches made of reeds and rushes, glass-wool clouds, cascades shadows and kerosene lamps and murky atmosphere and dark alleys the jungle of gamblers, pornographers, killers and blackmailers who have attached themselves to the rich old general a landscape of nightmares if such satanic dealings were possible, they would probably look very much like this. The people of the village all throng into the street, or they all race to the beach, or they all go inside and Slam their doors, or they al go to persecute Rosy, all at once She married out of common sense, not out of love, and although she is still best friends with the man she loved, we can't accept her great love as being made on Olympus life is not so simple Somehow it diminishes Mephisto to assign him carnal desires That way tragedy lies. = they are only ostensibly talking about horse racing: It's astonishing to realize she was 20 but it has its consolations. He knows all the shortcuts and all the scams and steals to survive. is corner of the prison camp is a miraculou urce for Hershev bai guys get killed and others get arrested, and we don't much care What else did he have? He wasn't particularly handsome, he wore a rug, he wasn't tall he found his own laconic values and removed some of the bad ones, neatly proving his point. They look like Photoplay covers, and speak in the clichés of pulp romance. He hates his job. Hates, hates, hates it. the buzzing fluorescent tubes above his desk may be driving him mad. his exteriors are phony-he wants you to notice the artifice why shouldn't he go out in style by leaping into the volcano? It may not have been fun to live through, but it creates a kind of joyous, desperate tension a slight awkwardness in the way one image is replaced by another shocking behavior is treated with passionate solemnity, while parody burbles beneath. paradoxically he seems the most Irish. = at night, in those corners of our minds we deny by day, magical things can happen in the moon shadows. It is sophomoric, obvious, predictable, corny, and quite often very funny. to see them again is like listening to a song that was popular the first summer you were in love. The death sentence is a liberation.

Been hearing about Davenport’s brilliance for years and now that I’m finally digging into the rare, signed small-press version I have of his masterpiece, my neck hurts from nodding along. A truly commendable stylist and TV-hater.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE IMAGINATION FORTY ESSAYS BY GUY DAVENPORT Journalism, the purpose of which is to inform and to disseminate, isn't doing its job; neither are the schools. Thirty years of liberal twiddling with the lines of communication has made it almost impossible to broadcast anything but received prop-aganda. All the arts are in the same predicament, so that what's happening in the minds that keep other minds alive and give them the courage to live is reported, if at all, in a dangerously denatured and official trickle of news. The arts can look after themselves; they are used to neglect and obfusca-tion. It is the people who suffer from the dullness and ignorance of the press. The diligent goddess Nemesis is an ironic old girl. Time was, the journals were literate in America and cried out for poets to grace the nation. Now the journals when they babble about poetry are illiterate, and can't even find out the poets' names. Guy Davenport’s signature on a bookplate.

I asked my editor and got an interesting reply that you might enjoy:

This is actually a controversial topic among indexers! (There are indexing message board posts debating it, if you want to go down a wormhole.) The argument is that readers are more likely to seek him under M, and our indexer (Joan Shapiro) went with that in this instance. If he were mentioned more than once, I'd suggest a double citation. We can move it to X, Malcolm, if you prefer. (That's how it would appear in a bibliography.)

Rereading Gatsby for the first time since high school and frankly there are parts where the prose is so purple it’s exhausting. Here is a dude who can’t sleep:

But his heart was in a constant, turbulent riot. The most grotesque and fantastic conceits haunted him in his bed at night. A universe of ineffable gaudiness spun itself out in his brain while the clock ticked on the washstand and the moon soaked with wet light his tangled clothes upon the floor. Each night he added to the pattern of his fancies until drowsiness closed down upon some vivid scene with an oblivious embrace. For a while these reveries provided an outlet

My debut book is OUT TODAY! 'Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion' is about how indie rock changed the mainstream and the mainstream changed indie rock in the 21st century. Buy it and let me know what you think:

For anyone curious, I was asked a few questions about John Fogerty’s new “Legacy” album and the interviews he’s given about it. Here are my answers. For the record, the album stinks.

Thanks, Felipe. So just for your own context, all on the record: I published A Song for Everyone in 2018, and had some serious 1. In recent years, do you think John Fogerty's role in rock has been vindicated? How relevant was he really? He's more respected now than ever, and that's wonderful. I hear musicians and writers praise CCR all the time, always for the power of the sound and the songs. He still plays to huge crowds as a solo artist. His songs remain beloved and popular, used in movies, talent shows, and (often by idiot republicans) in political rallies and ads. 2. Why does John Fogerty need to re-record those old CCR songs? Is it really a contribution? He doesn't and it's no contribution at all. He has one justifiable reason to do this album: John Fogerty has suffered one of the most prolonged and infamous nemesis-manager relationships in pop history. He signed away the publishing to his songs as a young man and only bought them back last year. This is his rightful ripoff of Taylor Swift's example, faithfully re-recorded versions of his famous songs released in a new context that gives him more royalties. The songs are near-replicas, like Swift's, and like hers, they are no improvements. But more to the point, hers are true solo albums, whereas Creedence was pointedly four guys, unadorned. For reasons I can't really grasp, John Fogerty has nevertheless insisted for 50 years that the other three member of Creedence were incidental to the band's artistic and financial success, or even an obstacle to it. He doesn't even mention Doug and Stu by name in his many interviews, and he only mentions his brother Tom to wash over his truly shameful behavior in the months before Tom's death in 1990. In that context, the new record feels like the lastest and most brazen attempt to write them out of the band's story. It's bizarre that he would re-record these songs so faithfully while simultaneously never even mentioning the contributions of his three band mates. 3. In a recent interview, Fogerty stated,

Charlie Watts died 4 years ago today. Here’s a little taste of the chapter about him in BACKBEATS. “When the tributes began after he died in 2021, it was as though a saint fell.” Preorder: www.simonandschuster.com/books/Backbe...

Charlie Watts looking dapper. But I repeat myself. the drums. In the truest jazz fashion, Charlie Watts's playing is always alive. He is always in active conversation with his bandmates and never repeats himself. In As a rock drummer, Charlie Watts is an ideal, yet he was as human a musician as any who ever lived. His gift to the Rolling Stones was to implant his creative, controlled personality in every note he played, as much personality as in his droll humor and hangdog face. When the tributes began after he died in 2021, it was as though a saint fell. BACKBEATS A HISTORY of ROCK AND ROLL in FIFTEEN DRUMMERS JOHN LINGAN

Another important point: Swift re-recorded her songs as a stronger singer than she was a near-child. No knock on the guy because he’s goddamn 80 years old, but Fogerty’s vocals here sound like shit.

When I interviewed Booker T, he talked about the crew of musclemen that Neil kept in his circle to carry all the heavy tube mixing boards for their recording sessions. I think about that a lot.

God as my witness, one day you’ll find yourself in an OK-but-could turn bad mood, you’ll go looking for a pick me up listen. You’ll put this on and it’ll hit so hard it hurts. The reissue also has an EP of them doing Everly covers.

Seconds of Pleasure isn’t my favorite record but it sure feels like it when it’s on.

Today we remember Buddy Harman who left us 17 years ago. He was widely regarded as the father of modern country drumming, integral to defining the rhythm and feel of the Nashville Sound in the 1950s and beyond. May he rest forever on 2 and 4 🥁 #BuddyHarman
