I donât think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make whatâs happening now look like childâs play. And people are disappearing.
This isnât merely expressive harassment. When we make it harder for them to do evil they are less able to do evil. When protesters here forced them to work through the night they were not on the job kidnapping people the next day.
I was there last night, w/ protesters trying to stop vans from removing detainees. I wish that many more people would come out, it actually makes a difference. Because I.C.E. agents were in Newark 'til 3am on Friday morning, they were short staffed in NYC on Friday, so fewer kidnappings yesterday.

Joanna committed an act of civil disobedience, one that is amply justified by the crimes against humanity that she protests against, crimes which are going unpunished.
These cases are both free speech cases. It is a violation of international human rights law to punish acts of civil disobedience in a way that inhibits expressive speech. Joannaâs rights were violated in this way; and her harsh sentence has an inhibiting effect on others.

According to what Iâve heard reported, people who accept the pardon can be subpoenaed and compelled to testify. They cannot argue that their testimony could self incriminate. People who reject pardon can still plead fifth amendment.

The triad in my head is Adaptation, Mitigation, and Reparations. And the relationship between the 3 is that all 3 are needed for any climate crisis response to be meaningful. The time when any amount of M can reduce the need for A is past. But no amount of A will ensure a future without M. ?

Friends, Joanna is asking us to call President Biden to ask for a pardon for her and other non-violent protesters. Joanna served two months in federal prison for smearing children's washable finger paint on a piece of plexiglass while appealing for action for climate justice.
I fully believe that the reason Carter was voted out of office was because he told the people of the U. S. that limits exist, even for this superior nation; and this truth is so unacceptable that no national politician has dared to utter it since then.
Twenty years ago I heard some expert speaking on the radio saying that it would be inevitably absolutely necessary to address global heating in 3 ways: mitigation, adaptation, and reparations. I donât believe that anything has changed this. Nothing works without all 3.

The U.S. government has been supporting a genocide for the last year (or more), and it has been undermining international action to mitigate climate crisis, abetting ecocide for many years. We see who has resisted and who hasn't, so we know pretty well who will and won't resist injustice in future.
I would have voted for Shirley Chisholm, or Pat Schroeder, or Barbara Jordan, or Bella Abzug in a heartbeat. But I wasnât going to vote for genocide, so I voted for a white woman instead of the black woman.
