I usually believe in "slow news" and tend to write about things the next day, but this Kimmel shit is such a mess, I put this together quickly. Key points: 1. Most people are pretending Kimmel said stuff he didn't. 2. SCOTUS just last year said that you can't do shit like this.

With alt text:

Obituary from an uncited source, which reads: Charles James Kirk, 31, died on Wednesday from a gunshot to the neck at a Utah Valley University campus event just as he was trying to deflect a question about mass shootings by suggesting they were largely a function of gang violence. He died with a net worth of $12 million, which he made by espousing horrific and bigoted views in the name of advancing Christian nationalism. The foundation of his empire was the group he cofounded and led, Turning Point USA, which is a key youth-recruitment arm of the MAGA movement. Kirk was able to launch Turning Point at the age of 18 because he received money from Tea Party member Bill Montgomery, right-wing donor Foster Feiss, and his own father, also a prolific right-wing donor. He was an unrepentant racist, transphobe, homophobe, and misogynist who often wrapped his bigotry in Bible verses because there was no other way to pretend that it was morally correct. He had children, as do many vile people.

One reason is you don’t really need it. I’ve planned trips to everywhere I want to go assuming the ID Buzz’s 235 mile range (which is more like 200 at highway speed). The places that are tricky are like Canyon De Chelly or the Wind River Mountains. Central Ohio is fine.

That’s not precisely true. It takes more energy to get up a mountain, but as long as you have enough to make it to the high point, you get most of that (like 80% - 90%) back on the way down.

What mountain are you thinking of that a 30 kWh battery won’t get you up?

Yep. Also existing EVs have more than enough range for >95% of people. And most people don’t have any idea how long they spend stopped on their family road trips. There’s no need to charge as fast as you can fill a tank if it takes 15 minutes to get the kids back into the car.

2nd version of my refraction #sundial: in water. Diagram is set under 4.5cm of water. Where the vertical stick goes through the water surface, water is bent and casts a bright spot on the diagram, marking solar time and the subsolar point on the map (The bead at the top isn't even needed). 🔭 🧪

As for everything being surface, I’m buoyed by the fact that our local renaissance festival, where actual performers perform actual performances, sometimes dropping juggling balls or otherwise not being absolutely perfect, sells out earlier each year. People still like art.

White sliced bread isn't exactly hard to find in most shops. Just like it's not hard to find TV shows with White or cishet protagonists. There is a psychological phenomenon here at play though, and talking about "normal bread" is very telling. Mini-thread 🧵 of my thoughts trying to unpack it: 1/

15/🧵 This is why I keep saying: Anything that helps lift the poorest in society out of poverty is a form of fighting fascism. - Anything that helps educate and inform those who are ignorant or misinformed, and increase our understanding of the world and each other is a form of fighting fascism.

It’s only a metaphor if there isn’t a direct causal relationship between official policy and the situation.
