Trying to make the Internet a nice place for humans. Chicago. I post mostly art, art process, some trash. Reskeets mean you fucking crushed it.

Yes and: the Guard are not the issue. Bored 20 year olds we can handle. ICE and FBI and whoever else staffs the snatcher vans are more worrying. No hard border.

Empire of AI by @karenhao.bsky.social is VERY MUCH worth your time. Meticulously researched and incredibly well-written, it exposes the ecological and labor exploitation of an industry that needs to be regulated. Or dismantled. Labor Day is a perfect day to start it. bookshop.org/p/books/empi...

Diagnostic ML has been around for a couple decades and is not a large language model or "genAI" in any sense.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Yeah this is a bad take. A cheap screening that funnels a very few people into a more definitive screening is good. In this context 1/3 of candidates being real detections is fine. I suspect if this didn't have "AI" in the title no one would be writing about this at all.

Ok so this apparently is a bathroom being renovated and "throw a trashbag of moldy drywall out a window rather than walk it out through the Lincoln Bedroom" is sadly plausible
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Watching xAI ask for political purity under the banner of objective truth from an ML model has been the comic relief plot of this season.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Right, and you've got product decisions interacting with emergent stuff (most significantly, accuracy) in ways that's hard to test in a lab.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Not exactly. The behavior layer of being a helpful question answerer is built quite deliberately in post-train. Completion models don't do that without humans wrestling it out of them.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Yeah, I think we are aligned on the tech, you articulate this well. In addition: GPT-2 landed into laps of ruthless fundraisers Altman etc like a AK-47 in a Revolutionary War platoon.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
Heel turn moment, post GPT-2 when chatgpt was trained to have back and forth conversations. Completion models don't do that without post-train. This was a product decision, made very early.
Friendly Skeleton (@jonathan.eylerwerve.com) reply parent
A refinement of this point might be that the ELIZA effect (eg humans projecting sentience onto, like, pencil erasers with eyes drawn on them) is a known vuln in the human psyche and chat models are a weaponized exploit of this. VC money unlocked faster than we have *ever* seen.

I attempt to explain to writers that the entire subscription business is a list of subscriber emails and an agreement to run a credit card number. Every other piece you can rebuild. So if you can't port those things, someone else owns it.
