Friedland started his interview to get Torres to be authentic and to have a real conversation about why no one is meeting the moment. Torres showed he is incapable of being a human in the face of a genocide. Torres, in that moment, was elevated to become the avatar of the Democratic Party.
Torres can’t conceive that people are horrified by the single worst humanitarian disaster that most people living today have ever seen and are becoming demoralized by a party who can’t even unify against it.
Because Torres is a soulless bot and trained politician, he is unable to pick up on this subtlety. To him, Dems are moving forward. Naturally, when the conversation does turn to Zion, it falls to pieces because Torres has already shown himself incapable of reflection.
Friedland was giving Torres an out, a way to really explore this issue in a non-judgmental way. Is the problem in the constant campaigning? Is the problem the whole fundraising apparatus? Is the answer in decades of broken promises? Friedland is genuine in wanting an answer.
Because, how do you square that circle in having a lower approval rating that a man enacting literal fascism in America? How do you justify that to yourself?
The interview didn’t start with Gaza. Far from it. It really started when Friedland outlined just how underwater Dems are *despite* the horrific actions being conducted by Trump. Friedland, in disbelief, is trying to seek from Torres answers to why this might be.
I’m reviewing clips of that Ritchie Torres interview (cause I’m terminally online) and I’m realizing just how amazing it is a contemporary document of voiced frustration, and I just have to applaud Friedland for conducting it exactly the way he did. 🧵

I love that. Yeah, I agree totally. I’m not entirely sure if either person was expecting the interview to go the way that it did, and while it wasn’t beautiful to watch, it captured a human moment beautifully.
It was perfect. It was one part Cumtown, one part Adult Swim, and one part manic therapy session.
For me, Friedland was the perfect cypher for all of us who have lost our minds over two years of this shit. He was spitting and sputtering and not making sense at times because we’ve all lost the words to speak to this moment. Or at least, that’s what it felt like for me.
This will be a super uncomfortable watch for a lot of y’all, but Adam Friedland represents those of us who have spent 22 months watching the the absolute worst humanity has to offer and we’re all falling to pieces at this point.

The point I was clumsily trying to make was that no one is adopting positions that are important to me into their platform. No one with real power, at least. It’s all about how can we attract more Trump voters to our side by assimilating more of their views, so why is it up to me to move on issues?
The other person had the viewpoint that it’s important to hear both sides so that you can formulate an opinion which sits in the middle. I said that I have absolutely zero interest in hearing anything from the other side because the center only moves one way, which is to the right.
Recently, the topic of hearing both sides of an argument came up at a friend’s place in response to a confession I made about how I’m low-key obsessed with sussing out people’s political viewpoints. I imagined the response would have been different than it turned out. 🧵

If you, dear reader, have so much as dabbled with AI have experienced this same thing. It's so incredibly frustrating to have usable tools taken away from you and replaced with text bot bullshit that doesn't fucking work because some designer was too fucking lazy to design a fucking dashboard.
I was honestly surprised how utterly bad this was at just doing the thing that it's advertised at doing. To top it off, this thing is really expensive. Based on the 16 queries that I made on trying to squeeze one usable report from it, I was provided the estimate that it would be $83 USD per month.
I kept on tinkering with this thing but it somehow kept getting worse and worse with each prompt I fed it. I got errors from simple requests:
Thinking that it might respond better if I used number instead of silly things like month names, I tried "totals for every day in month 4." This, surprisingly, generated a report...it's just that all the numbers were for 2022. I modified my query with, "Make the year 2025" to which I got this:
Moving on, I gave the bot something more. I tried "totals for every day in April." Suddenly, I was presented with the error, "I am only able to assist with topics related to Sigma queries." This is a very, very bad sign.
I started small with "I need to compare the totals for the past years by month." I could see it build an SQL query in real time, which was somewhat impressive. The report it gave me was...okay, but it didn't provide me a way I could export this if, say I needed to give this to my boss.
Here's how Stripe's Sigma works. You have a text box where you can prompt in human readable terms the report you want. Stripe does it's thing and gives you that report. You can also use the text box to modify your query to custom fit what you need. Seems cool, right? Well, only if it works.
But you know what was there instead? "Custom reporting with an AI assistant." Oh joy, just what I always wanted. I was tasked with seeing if this could deliver the info we needed. I was honestly excited because, truth be told, like any software dev worth their salt, I wanted to break this thing.
I'm a WP developer and do a lot of work supporting clients and their website needs. One of our clients uses Stripe for payment processing and they needed a report that used to be accessible right from Stripe's dashboard. You would not believe what can't be found anymore? You're right, that report.

Why aren't journalists around not condemning these atrocities against their own? Reporting on this while doing nothing to stop it is shameful. Every day sees the death of more people trying to tell the world what is happening. The least you can do is criticize those doing the killing.

If you need any more proof that a genocide is underway, look towards Gaza's neighbor and only other refuge for Palestinians, the West Bank. Hamas does not operate here, only the non-aggressive Palestinian Authority. Regardless, Israel treats Palestinians here as they would in Gaza.
