To me “retro” on Twitch has always been about the people anyway, regardless of individual preferences, which mirrors my experiences in the other communities I’ve mentioned in this thread.
Same with old televisions — an 80s vs 90s vs 2000s Trinitron are all completely different at a technical level
I think there are many better heuristics to use than the catch all of “retro” In the typewriter world if you say you prefer 20’s or 50’s or 70s machines people who care to engage in the convo have a pretty solid understanding of what that does and doesn’t include aesthetically.
As a collector of other old things like typewriters that have multiple periods within their history, I have taken a liking to just using the decades to identify my preferences because people generally know exactly what I’m talking about and can make a solid guest about my reasons when I do.
