Hearing of layoffs at Adweek, my old home. Allegedly up to 25% of the newsroom. Unlike other outlets that lay off folks, no memo went out. Adweek is owned by Shamrock Capital, a PE firm that bought Taylor Swift's originals for $360 million from Scooter Braun. Shamrock bought Adweek in 2020.

An absolutely harrowing and important story -- ChatGPT and other chatbots are becoming deeply enmeshed in many people's personal and social lives to an incredible degree, and the consequences can be devastating.

Thanks for taking so much time to report an extremely difficult story.
Mental health experts told me people with suicidal thoughts should talk to trained humans, not chatbots and that rather than just giving a helpline, chatbots should push people to call it or make it very easy to connect, what they called a "warm handoff." Text or call 988 if you need it yourself.
Because ChatGPT operates on statistics, it’s providing “information” based on its training data. Why is ChatGPT trained on so much material supporting suicide?
The exchanges between Adam and ChatGPT are devastating. This, in my mind, is the worst one. One of his last messages was a photo of the noose hung in his bedroom closet, asking if it was "good." ChatGPT offered a technical analysis of the set up and told him it 'could potentially suspend a human."

Plaintiffs in one of the VOA vs. USAGM (Kari Lake) cases tell reporters following today's federal court hearing they're encouraged after Judge Lamberth from the bench told the defendant's attorney the government isn't complying with his injunction to restore the broadcaster's 49 language services.
Gov lawyer Brenda Gonzalez Horowitz said they’ve been following the judge’s April 22 order “in good faith” and are serious about keeping him updated. Judge Lamberth wasn’t havin’ it: “I don’t think so,” he clapped back 😏 He gave the administration until Friday to file a written update! @apnews.com
