So why do we keep using and throwing money at such systems? First, automated decision support systems can work in the right scenarios, so we extrapolate that they must be able to work everywhere. Second, we are suckers for automation bias. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat...

Replacing human judgement with mathematical models to make things more "fair" and "consistent" is an idea that's been around for over a century, but we keep discovering (again and again) that these models fail due to their design and input while providing cover for systemic cruelty.
