There was an absolutely MASSIVE spider in my apartment: Google search AI unhelpfully listed all the most venomous spiders in California. My university's entomology department website has a simple listing of local spiders w/ pictures & assuring me this one wasn't dangerous.

You would say the same thing if you were reading entrails, is my point. Your experience of an output as "objectively good" isn't reliable evidence to distinguish LLMs from other people's experience of magic in other objects. It is evidence of other interesting things, just not that thing.
Like I said elsewhere, I think there's a lot interesting to take from this. But "I don't understand it" is not evidence of anything about the object. It's evidence about the person viewing the object.
I'm not interested in the level of pedantry that says "we don't understand" is different from "beyond understanding." Feel free to insert "beyond [my current] understanding", which is what I meant.
I think there certainly are interesting implications to the fact that people find them convincing. Could be leverage to understand wittgensteinian language games, for example. But the story there is again about people's beliefs/interpretations.
If this is an eliza effect, you would say the same thing. Your experience of it as "mysterious" and beyond understanding is what you (and many) rest on here. My point is that people point to that all the time as evidence for other objects as well.

I would read the hell out of an emperical piece comparing proana forums with proana chatbot conversations, for example.
There is a certain exceptionalism with AI, as if people never used the Internet to learn how to e.g. self harm, never found encouragement for the worst things there. There *is* something different about chatbots. But figuring out what really is different and what's more continuity is important work.

It was only a matter of time before we had a major news story with horrific details, but I don't think most people reacting know the true scale or depths of depravity going on in chatbot land. And among them all, chatgpt is one of the much more "safe" products.

You'll find things to annoy you in any of them (e.g. Michael sometimes misunderstands how stats work or mischaracterizes Foucault) but it's not enough to send me away.

Yes! All of the writing on VC points to this, too. Runs on promise. As long as it exists, people will find absurd things to promise, and we'll have to live with the result.
Yeah, this would probably help. But even going to the "desktop site" instead of the mobile site removes a bunch of the crap and makes it more readable. It's specifically extra bad for the mobile version of sites.

Every once in a while I open a website on my phone instead of a real computer and ... It's pure hell? So many pop ups and auto play things. It feels like I'm back in 2009 removing malware from people's computers after they watch too much porn from sketchy websites. Except I'm not being paid.
