Their resistance to swallowing bull š© is dying
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. I knew since I was 11 years old I would not have what it takes to be a mother. Approaching 50 now & I still know that. Particularly children age 0-3 I just do not have the skills & wasnāt willing to screw up some kidās life forever just because other people said I should have kids.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
I look at this way, I pay taxes for education that my non-existent child doesnāt need, contribute to social support my children wont ever need. I pay a childless tax & I am happy to do so. Childless people help support other peopleās children & their futures. I am still doing my part for society
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Elon is making a good stab at helping Reform do exactly that! We are on the same slippery slope with āillegal immigrantsā āsex change in schoolsā lies etc. Do we let go of all the checks & balances for algorithm controlled, billionaire-curated, misinformation badged as āfree speechā ?

Absolutely, he decided to make trans venomous hate his brand. Much like Joanne but with (apparently) slightly less coherent legal advice about skirting the edges than she got.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
He did post it though. That was his right. Does he have the right to exemption from consequences? Iām not sure given his relentless abuse of his platform to be a vile transphobe. Freedom to spread online hate & provoke offline violence has worked extremely well in destroying the US.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Sadly, inflexible aspects in evidence production/academia have created so many barriers to participation and though co-production, participatory design are growing in popularity, if you arenāt asking the right questions (because your perspective is limited) the bias is baked-in from the outset.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
š heās trying to appeal to Reform voters by repeating their racist talking points and flag shagging. Letās agree to disagree here.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
increase exercise + social contact benefits + play, which can all help offset some effects on health are lost because they donāt fund & staff accessible facilities like a swimming pool (which children experiencing disabilities can also benefit from) Lived-experience perspectives really matter.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Itās like all the money they throw at studies and interventions on childhoold obesity yet the council pool is closed so often when families show up to swim, they eventually stop coming. Increasing exercise is potentially a lot easier than changing childrenās diets, when they live in poverty.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
If you can afford the up-front investment to stock a kitchen with utensils, spices & storage space & cleaning products to then youāre already starting from a different perspective than many experiencing regular poverty. Itās alo harder to manage/stretch budgets with unexpected poverty taxes.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes exactly that. The intention or desire to eat healthier gets cancelled out by numerous barriers; barriers which often result in (real world terms) a better cost/time/benefit to just buy Greggs (or fast foods) which is cooked already.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
His normal is so batshit anyway it will be a challenge to evaluate. If he has Parkinsonās and they have put in deep brain stimulator we wont know if the hair and hat conseal surgery. The device would mask the tremor at-least long enough to do a presser. I donāt expect to get much health insight.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Two sides of protest with potentially different issues. I am more worried about anti-racism, anti-facism ability to get people out of their apathy. Dems were slow to organise & that gave the impression that MAGA was more mainstream/less real resistance to theit hate
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Wheras the rightās protest rely more on communities having an antagonist to mobilise people through anger & not everyone in the community is yet at a point where they would associate with the community nutter/vigilante types
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
I think itās really hard because actual organisations often have overlapping fundraising activities (understandably) mixed in woth comms invititing ppl to join organised protest, but it can be really off-putting. So lots of people who would like to something, but put off by that, are lost
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
What a great way to spend $1m per day. Imagine if that was invested in communities and mental health professionals with specialist emergency response training, who can work with law enforcement, instead.

šš I like it. So many ways to interpret. When X dies, when the civil war starts, when the zombie apocalypse beginsā¦
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Do you know what the Scottish Index of multiple deprivation is? How many streets in Surrey do you think might be in the most deprived decile? He went to a grammar school. So he had access to education that keeps out those whose behaviour or academic ability might affect his education.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
He experienced the lower-end of a middle class existence maybe. I donāt think itās equivalent to living in a big city scheme, in a single income household though. Did his parents own their home?
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Try that with a single income household and living in an actually deprived area. Oxted doesnāt exactly scream like itās a town experiencing systemic poverty issues. Communities that do experience that have other gaps in social support (lack of community spaces for example). Overcrowded classrooms
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Politicians donāt stoke racism and hatred towards other poor people when they care about fixing things for poor people. Starmer is not red, heās purple.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
āMostā Keir went to grammar school and lived in Surrey, did he not? He had a two parent household and his mum not only had a job but was a nurse when she was well? I think maybe we have different parameters of what we mean when we are thinking about lived experience of poverty.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
We werenāt even the poorest people in our street & I remember my mum taking 3 small children and managing us and 5 heavy bags of shopping which requires her to have time & busfare the get to the ābig shopā. Provy checks to get school shoes when school went back. So many more poor taxes now.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Thatās why I said most not all. With most not having that and way way too much of the evidence base for public policy not having meaningful, robust, representation from people living it, we have a lack of empathy running through many policies & interventions.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Itās more expensive to shop local & if you live in deprived area they often have less fresh produce offerings. No space in home to store food even if they could accord to bulk buy. May not have a freezer. ā¦.and so on.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. Accessibility to a kitchen, electricity & equipment are not the only barriers.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
So Ā£20 = 5 x Greggs or Ā£20 = Ā£3 electricity and still need to buy ingredients, pay for electricity for fridge, donāt have a baking tray, or sieve, only have 2 pots. So to cook I may need Ā£23, Ā£26⦠No money for transport (or delivery min spend at Tesco) & ingredients at convenience store.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
So if I want to cook I first need to £20 just to get my oven on. But I need heating as well, internet. So do I want to use my £3 on cooking? If tgeyyqualified for any voucher schemes or been capable of filling in forms or engaging with support on top of that,
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Ā£10 or more of the money loaded onto keycard immediately goes to debt + prepay meter has additional āstandingā charges to standard rates. So Ā£20 might only convert to Ā£8 of actual available electricity. My meter is on emergency so also -Ā£5 for that. Ā£20 = Ā£3 of electricity.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
You canāy pay electricity for 4 months. Debt circa Ā£400. Eventually Electricity supplier gets warrant to break locks & force entry to home to install pre-pay meter. Prepay has keycard you add Ā£ to at shop then put in meter to activate electricity.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Studies should not be designed without understanding participation needs and should have some flexibility (e.g. to reduce off-putting, overwhelming, wall-of-text jargon-loaded ethical statements on the landing page or before start of interviews). Study design often creates power dynamic.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely and they repeatedly highlight the sample often lacks participation from people living in lower socioeconomic areas then do hee haw to change that. Studies too often overgeneralised from your WEIRDs to entire populations. I rarely see any Qs with accessibility principles applied.

Looks like a cross symbolising a plague or something š Just sayingā¦.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Thatās a choice and it leads to policy out of touch with the lived reality for way too many.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Then you need money for ingredients and to run the fridge etc. So it is in fact cheaper to have Greggs. Or never had bad credit score & known many āpoor taxā that goes with that. They donāt involve people with lived expertise of poverty regularly either. Treat them like plebs & spongers.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Most of them donāt know what itās like to be poor. Like people who say itās cheaper to eat healthy have never had a forceably installed pre-payment electricity meter that requires Ā£10 on your keycard for debt so you need to put Ā£15 in to be able to use the oven & you donāt own much kitchenalia.

Worrying for so many reasons, but so much potential for additional harm if children later request their records which have been influenced by sycophantic AI. They already have to contend with biased & incomplete recording of their experiences & jargon-laden records. AI will gaslight them.

We should reserve more taxes in state but not take away completely from red states, if projects would just cause wider societal & economic harm. But red states willing to meaningfully enagage on issues that benefit all states through economic benefits(e.g. improved gun control) can get more.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Cutting state and international funding on infectious disease hurts everyone and poverty (and all the associated long-term societal costs) hurts everyone & the wider economy. But controls on tax cuts, gerrymandering, gun control, electoral college reform etc. could achieve minimal harm.
K9rsty (@k9rsty.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes and offer them a clear pathway back with conditions on gun control, gerrymandering and electoral college reform, if they want it back. Also with an agreement that every state website must prominently display the % of federal tax dollars they receive from predominantly blue states.
