I think it's interesting that the novel and all four film adaptations end the story in different ways.
My favorite Hopkins moment in his long career is the look he gives the German officer who offers him a piece of chocolate at the end of A Bridge Too Far. He conveys so much (disdain, defeat, resignation) in one glance.
