When I was homeschooled all the state required was a written statement from my parents that they were doing homeschooling. I was never given any instruction at home at all. Perhaps more dangerous is people who actively teach lies (also legal)
jessica (@hullojess.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
I've worked in the homeschool reform movement for seven years. Heard from thousands of formerly homeschooled adults who were abused and neglected in every way imaginable. There is so much grief and rage in the community. They have been systematically failed.

"Teaching is a profession" is a wildly underappreciated sentiment these days.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
My point is that the instruction may be terrible, or it could be good but still not working for those kids. I should also note that special ed is severely underfunded, so I acknowledge public school isn't necessarily great for kids with IEPs either. This mom should be seeking professional help tho.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
There's nothing wrong with developing skills later than most kids, but it can be sign that the instruction is not appropriate. In situations where kids in public school would have an IEP, they get specialists to work with the kid. Parents aren't generally equipped to handle special education.

What about constellations, which are not groups of nearby stars but rather artifacts of our perspective when looking out from the earth? Constellations are essentially arbitrary collections of stars and affect humans only by their visual appearance

I’m increasingly worried about the effect of this anthropomorphic language on ordinary people. It’s not a terrible analogy, and we often personify computers, but none of it is literally true. It’s a dangerous mistake to make. LLMs don’t even simulate a mind.

Let’s see some criminal trials and convictions then. It is unconstitutional to detain any person in the US without cause. The law demands that a prisoner be accused of a specific crime and have the opportunity to defend themselves from that accusation. Everyone has the right to habeas corpus.

I’ve never understood this excuse. Elon was a horrible person (and we knew this) at the time the cyber truck was unveiled. He was already supporting fascism among other things. Not to mention the CT was an obvious lemon from day 1 (broken unbreakable windows?). Some of us expected this outcome

just because you’re contradicting the original post. You can say it’s the reader’s responsibility but what is the point of your response if not to be helpful to readers who aren’t fact checking themselves?
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s not super helpful to say this without providing any way for the reader to find the evidence you’re referring to. If I wasn’t going to fact check the original post I’m not going to fact check yours. Now I just have two contradictory unsubstantiated claims. You’re not inherently more reliable

Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social)
Being raised in Virginia, Lee was always portrayed as a tragic noble hero. I was told he joined the rebs out of love for his home state, that he defended VA from the invading yanks. The US “invaded” VA b/c they tried to secede to preserve slavery. To defend VA was to defend slavery. No heroes there

What do you mean? I don’t think anyone is confused about whether they need a prostate exam or a paper smear. Transphobes object to the term “pregnant person” specifically because it does separate reproduction from gender. A man can have a uterus and require the related healthcare and still be a man.

Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
Uh, I’m pretty sure a person with a prostate should have the medical care required for a prostate and a person with a cervix should have the care required for that. That’s between them and their doctors. What does that have to do with their gender? No one is pretending to have different organs.

I think it’s a mistake to call LLMs AI. AI is just a meaningless buzzword, literally any computer program could be called AI. While LLMs are a world-changing technology, they’re not special or intelligent in any way other programs aren’t. AGI remains as speculative as it has ever been.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
The use of chatGPT caused a user’s death when the responses convinced them to take their own life
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
People who barely know what AI is don’t always understand that LLMs are just computer programs created by people, same as any other software. It’s confusing and misleading to use anthropomorphic language because people imagine sci-fi AI which LLMs are not.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the problem here is that people don’t genuinely attach agency to guns or trucks, but many people are under the false impression that LLMs actually do have agency. They are all just machines made and operated by humans and we should be clear with our language where people might get confused.

I admit I’m taking the piss a bit because you’re being ridiculous. You’re basically saying education is useless. I still don’t believe you have done real science without training. Even people with informal training have training. You need background knowledge to do research of any kind.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
Here’s the curveball. Reading and understanding the paper is not research. It’s literature review. I read a lot of papers like this and proved a new theorem which is now published in an academic math reference. That’s what math research is

Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social) reply parent
Research takes training, not just time. I have a masters degree and there are about 1.5 things I have the training to do research on. Reading isn’t research, you need to be able to evaluate sources and know the state of the field generally. Reading is still very good!👍

There can be more variation within members of a sex than between members of different sexes. By which I mean two cis men can easily be more different in this regard than either of them are from any cis woman. You just don’t acknowledge it because you’re not considering how diverse humans are.

And to clarify, sports is not the biggest problem facing trans people. It’s just one part of the discrimination and dehumanization of trans people which is an active threat to life, limb, and wellbeing. Being able to participate in sports is itself also important.
Kenneth (@kghawes.bsky.social)
I don’t think human rights are something to push for gently and slowly. Gay marriage was “tricky.” Civil rights were “tricky.” Women’s suffrage was “tricky.” “Threading the needle” was not the solution. Fighting was. Trans people are people. Trans rights are human rights.
