What a wild story. At least they are trying to curb bad driver behavior but solutions seem pretty obvious.

So I get what you're saying about needing to assess every time but I think that when it comes to political philosophy it is more a question of what should society or the state's default posture be.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I think it is about how much you trust the other party to not do something with their gain to hurt you or people or things you care about. I think most people can think of people they would change their default stance for.

It also is so weird to me that Trump says Epstein was “stealing” employees. TEENAGERS. Like, this wasn’t his CFO. This was someone who probably showed up to work late, had to regularly be reminded about company dress code, and was talking with friends while on the clock. As teenage employees do.

Yeah, I don’t know much about TX or Lower Mississippi Basin ag. Happy to see Ft Collins, which has great ag science schooling and jobs, on the list. If California or PNW wants a hub I am sure they will get one with future leadership but this seems like a good start compared to all the other stuff.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
I think there should be more than five hubs. I feel these five all make sense than original post implied. SLC area (Boise’s fine by me!) has lots of USDA beneficiaries even if not “top 5” state. I’ve also said CA/AZ should have a hub. Has anyone asked TX if they even want one if it’s not TXDA? 😉
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
I think OP wants TX to have something closer, as well. And I would agree with that, too.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh. You’re also arguing there should not be an office in Salt Lake City? I’ve crisscrossed every western US state. USDA plays a major role in these areas and regional offices in Salt Lake City and Raleigh both make total sense. There should *also* be an office in proximity to CA/AZ farms.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure if you are responding to me or OP but I agree. Even if you ignore ranching (which is also part of USDA mission) these areas are filled with ranching operations and they are cornerstones of those economies. Smaller part of economy in the east but still lots of small producers.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
No office in the southwest is a head scratcher given the quantity and diversity of crops and their distinct climactic and hydrologic profile. Locations of these five makes sense but more could be justified. Lots of small ops farms in eastern half of US and USDA also serves ranchers.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
CA and TX are “top 5” states on many lists just due to size. Yes, both are big ag producers but there are areas near all of these office locations that are, also. You may have a good point about the regional hubs but I think that map is not helpful.

More about why this area is not suitable for development here: pubs.usgs.gov/publication/...
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
The issue is more complex here than I think you are giving credit. The area between the Book Cliffs and developed land may look like a vast expanse that could easily be developed into housing or even agriculture but it is very susceptible to devastating erosion. Not a good place for housing, at all.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, hard disagree from me on the GJ example. The chunk of land north of this neighborhood is in city limits and not Fed-controlled land. Development has most likely stopped (for now) because a canal would have to be bridged for a small amount of useable land AND the airport runway is right there.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Can you share this address or neighborhood?
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d love for you to expand on your Grand Junction thought. There is a lot of non-Federal land that has not been developed for housing in the area and GJ has lower density than many growing cities on the Colorado plains which are unconstrained on all sides.
Limber Pine (@kotiak.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks for the link. It is an interesting read but a better quote to pull might be: “I don’t expect that such land sales would have a major impact on housing costs in western states.” or “most of this federal land isn’t anywhere near where the demand for housing is.”
