Also check for more normal issues like faulty, wiring, ground, loops, corrosion, etc.
Try *holding* the reset button. I recently got the same error and was stumped for hours. Turned out the board missed a connection which made the reset button behavior reversed. Those messages get printed so fast they only require the time while the button is pressed.

All too common unfortunately. Lots of these gadgets are destined for the trash as people are going to think they’re broken and won’t charge as they get rid of their USB A chargers. All because they forgot to add two €0.001 resistors 😒
Dear aliexpress sellers. Please make a USB C receptacle - USB C plug adapter that tricks a charger into thinking it’s connected to a 5V 500mA device which only charges with a crappy USB A - USB C cable.

On a long timescale, materials have an effect on each other. In this case, my assumption is that the (polystyrene?) window made the rubber from the elastic bands brittle. It could also have been UV, but they have been mostly stored in the dark.
