6 years ago today, 7 lives were stolen and 25 people injured in Midland & Odessa #TX by a shooter who should have been stopped by a background check. We owe it to them and to every victim of gun violence to finally pass universal background checks.
There has been an intense amount of coverage around the Minneapolis shooter. The real story is the lives that were lost and the lives that Harper and Fletcher lived. The journey that their families and communities will have in an effort to move forward. Talk about these kids. Please.

If we want to stop violent crime in DC and other cities, we must listen to and support those in the communities who have been doing the work for years. Occupying our cities— our homes—with armed military does not make us safer. It only promotes fear, heightens tensions, and creates a greater risk.

Repeating lies doesn’t make them true. Individuals with mental illness are MORE LIKELY to be VICTIMS of gun violence than anything else. Canada, Iceland, the UK, Australia, and Portugal have high rates of SSRI use. Guess what they don’t have? High rates of gun violence. It’s the guns.

I joined @wusa9.com.web.brid.gy to cut through the political theater and spin on the armed DC occupation. Removing ATF from its job of overseeing gun dealers is the opposite of “safety” and it is another example of policies from this administration that put DC lives in danger.
Burn a flag? Jail. Storm the Capitol and violently attack law enforcement? “Very fine people.” Real patriotism isn’t performative. It is upholding the rule of law and protecting our fellow citizens.
If you think you “need” armed soldiers outside the train station, your leaders have already failed. This White House and Congress have failed to meaningfully address public safety. Have failed to pass strong gun laws. Have failed to address the gun lobby. Have failed to invest in communities.

Deploying 1,700 armed National Guardsmen into our communities won’t make us safer. It escalates and endangers, and it diverts resources from meaningful solutions. Safety comes from strong gun laws and investing in prevention, not from soldiers with rifles in civilian settings.
This moment is definitely about Trump distorting the truth in DC, and it’s also about whether we allow an authoritarian rewrite of our nation’s cities, one armed takeover at a time. We cannot allow this Administration to recast the story of safety and of democracy in America.
While many of us are actively working to reduce violence, others are actively working to increase it.
Yes, Villanova was a hoax. But students still ran for their lives, still barricaded their doors, still texted loved ones what they thought might be their last words. The students were well-trained in exactly what to do. This is what America forces on our kids. No other country lives like this.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit just found New Mexico’s waiting periods law on firearm sales unconstitutional. Waiting periods save lives. New Mexico was right to pass this legislation. There is no Second Amendment right to receive a gun instantaneously.

Gun violence doesn’t just harm individuals—it drains life from entire communities. In 2019, 9M visits were lost, hitting non-White neighborhoods hardest. Young people deserve to grow up in vibrant, safe spaces. We must invest in real change.
We are thinking of the family of the police officer killed at the CDC HQ in Atlanta and all those affected. No one in America should fear getting gunned — at work or anywhere. We must end these tragedies.
