One thing that really hits you when you're directly affected by gun violence in schools is that there's nowhere to hide. Public, private, religious, whatever - unless you're going to homeschool your kids, we live in a world where they're at risk of something like this happening.

I felt you pain, and knew exactly the daze you were in. A couple years ago, there was an active shooter at my daughter’s workplace. She called me, terrified, while hunkered down. I felt so fucking helpless Thankfully, no one was injured in this case

My daughter knows the drills since she was in elementary school back in the early 2000’s. When she was in college she remembered the drills and always anticipated a shooting. Yes, as a parent, I would cry when my children would get on the school bus to go back to school after a school shooting knowing it was only a matter of a time before it’s your school. Even play dates I would ask if the homeowner had guns to make sure they were not accessible.

My 7 YO and 11YO were talking about the active shooter drill they had at school, casually, like it was nothing, and that really drove home to me how fucked up things have gotten.
Sickening! Especially since it doesn't have to be like this. The Republicans are responsible for the gun violence we are experiencing. In order for anything to change, they must stop kissing up to the gun lobbying.

As someone who has lost youth I have worked with in multiple school shootings, please know the effects at the cellular level show in different ways. Be mindful. Get counseling for you and your children from someone certified in PTSD. below are 2 resources: violence.chop.edu/types-violen...
Also be mindful that your children, at each different stage of their developemnet will reprocess (relive) this extreme event, interpreting. After initial ongoing counseling sessions wind down, be sure to schedule every 6 month check in sessions with the counselor the children have grown to trust.
It's mind boggling to me that I know a relative was on campus during the VA Tech shooting, and I also know a person shot at the Gabby Giffords event. Should all of us experience knowing NO ONE at a mass shooting?

Oh I was thinking of the mom who was shot in the head cause she left a gun in her kids pink backpack and the kid walked in while she was a zoom call for work and shot her in the head. Not even on purpose, just a result of how easy it is for guns to go off and you gave it to a toddler.
I recall one where a motivated gun owner decided he would make sure his kids could safely handle guns, so he called them into the living room for "training" and - with an "unloaded" gun - killed his 9yo daughter point blank in front of his 11yo son.
There's SO many examples. One guy was cleaning his gun and didn't make sure it was unloaded by racking the chamber. The gun went off, pierced through his wall into his son's bedroom and killed the son's best friend right in front of him.
My old bandmate's brother was "accidentally" killed by a gun cleaning roommate. Here in TX gun owners have no liability for accidents. FL is worse, no liability even for gross negligence... criminal intent is the bar. See Kathryn Hoover. It's these inequities that motivated my attention.
There's a patent, for reference, that's been around for like 30 years which prevents a gun from being fired unless a magazine is inserted into the gun. It would prevent a lot of deaths every year from negligent owners cleaning their weapons. Gun manufacturers still don't use that patent.
Only a moron can ‘clean a gun’ with a bullet in the chamber. You have to poke a brushy thingy into the chamber to clean it. There is no point in trying to put the brushy thingy in if there is a bullet in the way. “I was cleaning it and it went off” means they were playing with their toy gun.
My father was a sheriffs deputy and he made sure we all knew how to treat and handle guns. I've ended friendships with people who had guns and treated them like toys. I sat next to a friend when he shot himself in the head... he was playing with his dad's gun. People need training and certification

Guns in the home are more likely to be involved in non-self-defense incidents, such as homicides, suicides, or accidental shootings, than used in self-defense. So, even home isn’t exempt from gun violence.

You live in a ‘country’. The world isn’t like that. It’s important that Americans understand it isn’t like that in any other country but their own. A lot of Americans (not yourself) have no clue what the rest of the world is like.
That's why I (an American) only take vacations outside of the U.S. We can actually relax -- no worrying about being shot. It's also nice to not worry about inadvertently supporting a business owned by a Trumper.

That's been my thinking since I was 5 and was capable of self-awareness. I started school shooter drills that same age. I'm 27 now and it's still just as true. Even when states have tried to fix the issue, red states make the issue worse. I just can't.

It's truly devastating when there is a school shooting but this talk of hardening schools to protect children is a fantasy. If a mass shooter is determined to cause harm and has the means he/she will (as we've seen), shoot up the parade, mall, church, synagogue, concert etc. instead.
