he doesn’t say “dada” or his big brother’s name but he learned “Jimbo”. The past few days he has been saying “Jimbo! Woof woof!” at odd intervals. This dog might be his favorite person

this past weekend my 2 year old formed an indelible bond with my cousin-in-law’s dog Jimbo

as someone who did many of these days while my husband was in medical residency: best move is some sort of adventure that’s also an opportunity for you to hang with another adult. second best move is a simple home day with minimal cooking and a lot of outdoor time

we went to a lake this weekend and I think the toddler is going to run away to become a sea captain

my husband did residency training in a rural area that was attracting lots of these types and it kind of skewed the local economy - it drove up housing costs bc these people could pay top dollar, but it didn’t create more jobs bc everyone was working elsewhere

due to never knowing where the library will shelve something my move is always to have the library catalog open on my phone and search author/title names and then see where they are. If I’m really on top of it I’ll do this before I go to the library and put requests on the ones they don’t have

I’ve been reading some of this newsletter about picture books written by two contemporary picture book authors/illustrators and it’s really helped me understand picture books in ways I didn’t before. This one has a great discussion on early readers lookingatpicturebooks.substack.com/p/go-dog-go

I’m so glad we went ahead and got married even though only 6 people could be there and we couldn’t do 90% of the stuff we planned. It was still a beautiful day that I look back on fondly, but more than that, I would much rather have been married all this time than have had to wait

A friend of ours introduced us to the Sato the Rabbit series, translated from Japanese, very soothing and quirky. Don and Audrey Wood are GOATs for silly books (King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub, Silly Sally, the Napping House)

everyone knows and loves “The Snowy Day” but Ezra Jack Keats also did a fun series about a kid named Peter (“Whistle for Willie”, “Peter’s Chair”, “Hi, Cat”). Similarly everyone knows Carl the dog but Alexandra Day also did a series called Frank and Ernest where an elephant and bear have jobs

ok my phone did something weird here, ignore the repeated “something different” at the end of the post. was trying to say the wise parent ignores the screeching inner voice that says “you will never be or do enough for your child” and listens to the quieter voice of actual conscience

once you have a child, no matter what you are doing, a little gremlin inside your head is telling you that you should be doing something different…every day you must kill the gremlin so you can make actual reasonable judgements about what you are and should be doing something different

my oldest has been super social from a young age and used to get either rebuffed or babied at the playground by older kids. Now that he’s talkative this problem has completely disappeared and it’s now a regular social interaction entirely managed by him!
kathryn (@ksbrilliance.bsky.social) reply parent
I do find that a lot of elementary aged kids can be kind of weird towards friendly younger toddlers, likely because they never interact with toddlers regularly and just don’t know what to do (they have no sibs, their school is super age-segregated…) They seem to just feel awkward and unsure
