Saved my family when I was a kid in the 1950s and my dad lost his good job. He never got a job that good again, but he did get a stable job with union benefits, including health insurance, that saved us.

Agree. I am several years in on tackling buckthorn in my acre-sized yard. It is endless and difficult and necessary, lest it take over completely. If I have earned the right to talk about invasives as metaphor, I also choose colonialism.
National infrastructure can't be readily replaced, but I'm aware of organizing in local communities to prepare the best accessible health infrastructure possible for vulnerable groups. Out of such local efforts grow national mandates. Not soon enough, but the seeds of "better" are found in them.
Over the past decade, I have warned of eugenic implications of (largely) right-wing policy proposals and laws. So have a number of cherished colleagues and comrades. We were often accused of being alarmists. Nope. Just paying attention.
The money doesn't matter. There is never any sustained backlash for spending money for death-making institutions.
More than this is that they have been actively antagonistic.
