Which, again, is why people who believe it's essential for Dems to come together in a big, broad tent in the coming years—and I am one of those people—need to be getting behind Mamdani and urging others to do so. There's no Democratic big tent without him in it. For a hundred reasons.

Also the work: erasing culture and replacing it with slop. It’s a fascist project, full stop.

These kinds of fictions were already showing up in classrooms by then. The Houston Independent School District required educators in some schools flagged as underperforming to use district-provided teaching materials generated partly with AI. One worksheet asked students to compare AI-generated imitations of Harlem Renaissance art in which the faces of Black-appearing characters were distorted, prompting a backlash among some community members. (A spokesman for the district said that the AI creations weren’t so different from real Harlem Renaissance art with abstract faces and that teachers could flag problematic AI-generated material.)

We remind students every time they log in that our product is defective and it’s up to them to keep that in mind.

Adeel Khan, the chief executive officer of MagicSchool, told me that when his startup joined the program to bring AI education to Colorado schools, it had barely started attracting users; he said he’d been “excited to spread that all through Colorado.” The company has since grown to be one of the most successful US startups selling AI to schools. Its classroom chatbot, like others, relies heavily on the effectiveness of the large language models that underlie it. When I mentioned to Khan that MagicSchool’s ability to mitigate problems with accuracy and bias might be limited as a result, he said, “You’re right. There’s not that much we can do to mitigate it.” He added that the company puts prominent disclaimers inside its products noting that they might produce inaccurate or biased language and that users should double-check for this. “Every time a student signs in, it’s like, hey, this is how you use it responsibly,” he said. “We think it’s our responsibility to educate people.”

This resignation is an abrogation of their responsibilities as educators.

Education officials acknowledge all this. But they also describe becoming gradually convinced that AI will disrupt the entire workforce and feeling duty-bound to give students practice with it, shortcomings and all. “Our students are going to graduate into a world that is AI-powered,” Fran Newberg, deputy chief of the educational technology office for the School District of Philadelphia, said in an interview. “It’s our responsibility to expose them to these tools and how to use these tools wisely.” The Philadelphia district followed New York in blocking ChatGPT, but Newberg said officials realized that students would use AI anyway, leaving them little choice but to accept it in some form. ChatGPT is still blocked, but the district now offers Google AI products to staff members, teachers and high schoolers.

In what I'm sure is a source of pain to Republican-lite pundits like Matt Y & David Shor, the Dems have decided to campaign-message the way that the GOP's overturning of Biden's climate policies, and the crushing of renewable energy, are raising consumers' electricity prices. This is good.

Republicans have long said rising energy prices are because of radical climate policies from the left. Democrats think turning the tables on the GOP will help them make gains next year.

Whatever his current opinion is about anything, it’s like the pollen count to me: out of my control, fortunately not something I have to personally pay attention to, and, good or bad, a random indicator I don’t notice unless someone points it out.

At some point, he got a sinecure at HBO where he yammers like the person you don’t want to end up near at a mandatory work event, and he’s just kind of been doing that ever since. He talks. I find him incurious, nasty and impossibly smug. He disproves a media meritocracy single-handedly.

Friend of mine and the only reason I even have the half job I do; I would basically be homeless. She's had major, major health issues and it's to the point where she has to ask for help financially. She's great and very kind and generous and I'd like to help her out, can you spare a couple of bucks?

It won't fix the problem with Trump chasing/arresting a lot of farm workers, but SCOTUS overturning tariffs would help reduce how bad it will be for consumers.

Milton Eisenhower, in his inaugural address in 1943 as president of Kansas State College.

It will not be enough for man to know how to build a Grand Coulee Dam or a Golden Gate Bridge… . not enough to know how to till the soil and protect it… . For every man with a useful place in society will have several great responsibilities … . applying his specialized talents to the solution of community, state, and national problems… . Our concern is that men and women trained in scientific methods shall also gain tolerance, and understanding and wisdom… . Our concern is with the education of men and women determined to be free.

I can understand not knowing that this work exists, I guess? And it's classic pundit arrogance to imagine (and promote the worldview) that scientists don't understand ~real people~ enough to even think of doing this. But public health experts are also sort of giving into this weird erasure. Sucks!

there's this sort of collective amnesia about decades of very difficult work that's been done to study and understand anti-vaccine (1) communities and meet them where they are, and (2) organizations, who often have the resources to put up a good legal fight / harass researchers personally.
