For the record, Trumpism became ascendant in part because American liberalism made itself such an incredibly vulnerable target, and part of the reason it was such a vulnerable target was because people like you protected it from any good faith internal criticism for a decade, and now here we are. They were ample opportunities to come up with ways to reform American liberalism that would have made it more defensible and less subject to the most vitriolic critiques of the right, but you are among the individual people who was the most relentlessly hyperactive in declaring absolutely any of that internal criticism to be somehow off limits or in bad faith, and so in a very direct way you are a major part of the problem. It's telling that you seem to think that fundamentally the reason why there's been this massive conservative lurch is because liberals did not do enough to adequately police progressive discourse from any such criticism; as is typical of people in your position you seem to think that they're simply is no such thing as an organic conservative impulse within our country. But there is and was, which is why the woke moment was such a horrific strategic mistake. I suspect you know that.

A big reason Dems don't control the House right now—and this murderous spending bill is possible—is Andrew Cuomo, who fucked New York's congressional redistricting as governor and helped lose us seats in Congress. www.vanityfair.com/news/2022/06...

It all goes back to some tangled ancient history: When Cuomo was running for governor in 2010, he pledged to end “hyper-partisan” redistricting. Two years later he used the census-mandated redrawing of district lines as a chit in state budget negotiations. Cuomo got a new pension tier that lowered payments for some unionized state employees; in exchange, incumbent state legislators got the ability to create districts that would favor their reelection. The drawing of new congressional districts was punted 10 years down the road and placed in the hands of an unwieldy, supposedly “independent” commission. This year, when New York Republicans stalled the commission’s work, they essentially pushed redistricting into the state’s courts. Cuomo made strenuous efforts to steer the state down the ideological middle, which he claimed was a necessity early on—when Republicans controlled a majority of the state senate—but which also enhanced his own power. One byproduct was Cuomo’s nominating of the four relatively conservative judges, including one Republican, who in April voted to tear up the proposed congressional redistricting maps. “What Democrats did to our majority on the highest court would never happen in a Republican-controlled state,” Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney says, which is as close as he will get to blaming Cuomo. “That court made a mess of this, and it put the project in the hands of a Republican in Steuben County. And we got a crappy result.”

You know Bernie was objectively right about how embracing oligarchy is the first step towards fascism but I didn't think the Democrats would be so brazen about it

As a nerdy kid who all but lived in libraries, I used to think that old campaign of "READ" posters featuring pop stars reading books was cute but trivial. Now, I think it was the only thing keeping the country from descending into madness youtube.com/shorts/nCnKK...

🚨WOW. It turns out that a "Tren de Aragua gathering" the Trump admin said it broke up in March ... was just a BIRTHDAY PARTY. None of the people arrested at the party seem to have any criminal record — and none have been charged criminally in the months since it happened. Read the story below.

Sure seems like CPD has gone rogue and is assisting ICE in violation of the law. They shoved an alderman for good measure

We are at 2245 S Michigan now where organizers and electeds are holding a press conference after agents detained at least 10 people today. A representative from Organized Communities Against Deportation speaks about ICE taking people who are currently in asylum proceedings and appeals.

Second half of immigration court hearings have begun at 55 Monroe in Chicago. We can't film inside or are kicked out. Before lunch, we watched ICE take a half dozen people into custody after DHS dismissed their cases. It's happening in courthouses all over, including NYC at this exact moment.

Organized Communities Against Deportation organizers & Chicago alders now speaking on today's events at the ISAP facility. OCAD organizer says one of their members was told to come to the facility for a check-in, and did not come out as planned (sorry its sideways, don't know why it's doing that).

Lots just happened at once. Group of ICE agents just pushed past protestors, shoving some people - incl. Ald. Quezada - to the ground, in order to escort multiple people into vans, which then drove off. "It's the worst. It's devastating," Quezada says.
