Good luck #Edusky if you're back at school tomorrow. Even an Inset can be a shock, so be kind to yourself. It always takes me a while to get match fit, especially in September.

Disheartened by the recent Reform UK announcements on immigration, I've written to my MP. The text is below, if you'd like to do the same:

I'm contacting you to register my concerns around recent announcements made by Reform UK and Nigel Farage regarding immigration into the UK. Specifically, Mr. Farage said that if elected he would remove the UK from the ECHR in order to more easily deport illegal migrants. He also described how migrants would be returned to potentially unsafe countries such as Afghanistan. This is as much as I would expect from Mr. Farage, but what concerns me even more is that your government is not doing more to challenge such ill-thought out and frankly prejudiced views. As a former lawyer, I would have expected Keir Starmer to have defended the ECHR fully and without reservation. Unfortunately, I have yet to see anything like this in the media - worryingly, I saw that a Number 10 spokesperson (in response to the Reform policy announcement) said that 'nothing was off the table' regarding the management of immigration. This sounds suspiciously like the government agreeing with Reform and its plans. I did not vote for you and a Labour government to see it cede ground to right-wing extremists. I know the situation is complicated, but the government could do a much better job in calling out much of the recent nonsense from Reform UK and other allied organisations. I'm sure individual MPs are doing their best, but there seems to be a lack of co-ordination from the top and a lack of leadership. It breaks my heart to see individuals such as Farage leading the political agenda, and parties like Labour and the Conservatives allowing this to happen and indeed adopting much of the same language. I'm afraid if it continues, I will have to consider taking my vote elsewhere, either to the Liberal Democrats or the Green Party. I was very happy to see a Labour government elected last year, and I want it to be elected again in 2029. Yours sincerely,

True. In Aristophanes' comedy The Knights, old men complain about youngsters with their bad behaviour and long hair. It was written 2,300 years ago.

Ran into a former pupil in town, who's doing well at uni - great kid, and lovely to catch up. Also had an email from a Y11, thanking me for getting them a pass - another terrific kid, who definitely deserved it.

Here's an envelope I illustrated, which will be auctioned with other designs by celebs to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. I'll post details of how you can bid in due course. Reposts appreciated. #caricature #art

Caricature of Jack Nicholson in The Shining, drawn on an envelope, and made to look like he's bursting through the paper in his famous 'Here's Johnny!' moment.

I teach English, but thoroughly enjoyed the 'Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England' - I was after Shakespearean context, and got a whole lot more.

Good to hear. I do think I could get better at that. Although I often tell classes that Shakespeare is something you grow into over time, so don't panic if you feel a bit at sea.

What regrets does an 18-year old have, really? Whereas now, Leontes' yearning in Act 5 for the family he could have loved (had it not torn it to pieces) reminded me of what I've lost in the last 30 years.

Also a factor of ageing. I absolutely think we should study Shakespeare at school, but also in the knowledge that there are large swathes of it we won't appreciate (or understand) until much later in our lives.

It's my mum's fault, the Shakespeare habit. She took me to see Derek Jacobi as Richard III in the West End when I was 13 or 14, and I've had that damn Stratford monkey on my back ever since.
