I don’t know. I haven’t been in a few years. I asked; they haven’t answered yet.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Apologies for the niche question: Does anybody know if the TIFF bag policy (which wouldn’t allow anything that would be a work bag like a tote or a small backpack) applies if you have a press credential? I’m trying to figure out if I’m not going to be able to work between screenings anymore …
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Me tooooooo!
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Also a good guess.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, that could be.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Or that he’s suing somebody.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
This announcement is going to be a trade thing, I suspect.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I have seen people a couple of times standing on random corners just in twos and threes, holding “FREE DC” signs.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha! I hear you. I just think it’s an extremely hard job that I would not pretend I could do. He’s a good manager! His teams have had tons of success!
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, I think it’s always very easy to make better management decisions when you’ve already seen how things turn out than the manager made when he did not know how things would turn out.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
And to everybody who’s mean to Stubbs
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
What a great, great win. #phillies
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Ew.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Hahaha
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I was JUST thinking about this like two days ago Molly! In these words. “Remember torpedo bats??”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a very good comparison. There is absolutely no reason to call this dating if you would not call that dating.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
There are people who have sexual interests in things like cars, which is fine, but you don't see papers calling it "dating," because it's not, and because car manufacturers are not heavily invested in creating a public narrative that it is.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
This is not dating at all, so it is not common; it is impossible. It is gaming. Which is fine, but nobody wants you to believe they are "dating" Wario just because when they push the buttons, he does stuff, which makes it a RELATIONSHIP.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I absolutely get that, and I assume the good intentions of lots of the people involved. I think every place and examiner is different.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Because maybe if you’re 26, you can access the details of every traffic ticket in your life. But if you’re 40, you probably can’t, even if you don’t have many.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely. I remember people being like “Wait, I have to provide exact explanations of every traffic ticket?” Which is not to say there’s no reason to care if somebody has 50 traffic tickets! But expecting that level of detail is unrealistic. It also discriminates against midlife applicants.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
The other is that a friend of mine with an old drunk and disorderly charge was asked to “explain” it, and as he told it to me, he said, “Well … I was drunk. And I’m sure I was disorderly.”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
The first is that of my … I want to say there were five character references? … two specifically told me “I told them you’re a character!”, which says something about … something.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it wound up being, like, friends of my parents and a college professor, and whoever else? And I thought even then about the fact that for a lot of applicants, finding those people is way harder. I will say there are two funny stories I got out of it.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I was probably (by no accomplishments of my own) as well-positioned as anyone to find people to write references for me for the bar. But the rules were really strict—no family, I think no employers maybe?, it was clear that it couldn’t just be friends. It was hard to find people.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean yes, of course.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
If you suggest that “foreigners” can be identified visually, you do not in fact mean “foreigners,” which takes nothing away from the fact that there is absolutely nothing—nothing!—wrong or scary with being around and surrounded by actual “foreigners.”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Sure. The Braves tried this the other day, and the result was Ozzie Albies getting thrown out at home.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, the runners are slightly better trained than the ones you dealt with in high school.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Even if we wind up losing this game, in terms of priorities for the season, I will take a story where we get beat at the end and Luzardo was great over one where we pulled it out but Luzardo was terrible.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
And who ended up with a quality start because he pitched enough innings.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I don’t blame everybody for being fascinated by the Braves phenom pitcher, because he was great, but that is the first time in months I have seen Luzardo look like he did early in the season when there was talk that *he* might be a Cy Young contender. #phillies
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
It’s true that this was weird, but if anybody wants to intentionally set up rundowns between first and second, I say they are welcome to do so.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
You are doing awesome. The idea that people can walk up to you and say whatever they want without you doing anything except sucking it up is one I think it is a favor to disabuse them of.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)

Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Harrison Bader demonstrating his crab walk fielding maneuver (which is why they call him The Crab) while he was mic’d up was very cute. #phillies

I *almost* said “well his calling card is Crazy Heart”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, exactly. In most of the country, it’s not nearly as sensible or doable as it is if a lot of your travel is up and down the East coast. I agree with you that this is a thing where people sometimes very smugly do not know what they’re talking about.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
And people DO use that corridor. Maybe not as much as there could be, but in that corridor where it’s logistically helpful, the train is popular.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. That sounds absurd to me, as well as incredibly boring to sit through.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
He absolutely is, and many fans are brutal on those guys.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I think he’s a guy who loves to play who has no expectation of being Realmuto. He’s a team guy with a lot to offer.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
And what’s more, if Crash Davis were a real guy, one who came up briefly and then spent his whole career in the minors, the position of MANY fans would be “that guy sucks.”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
People struggle with this idea if they have never fully come to terms with the fact that Crash Davis is not a *great* baseball player.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I always tell people: If Crash Davis were a real guy, not a guy who ever was ever going to become a full-time MLB catcher but a guy who understands baseball a lot and can help your pitchers, he'd be a guy like Garrett Stubbs. (I mean, except with a different personality.)
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Don't care what the haters say, I love Stubby and I'm always happy when he's around.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, if that’s true, then it does seem like a bit of a clumsy statement.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, agreed. My point is really just that this is a combination of disclosing and not disclosing that’s going to get a lot of attention, even though many many stories turn out to be way more boring than they initially sound.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, could be!
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
This is a good thought. If the 911 call is out there, maybe they’re just explaining it. That might be logical.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
That is very possible, that could be the reason.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Like did she know it was him she was flagging down? Did he have security with him at the time, and did he personally jump out and do stuff? It’s like they have a boring story that is very simple plausible (car accident!) and they tacked on this prelude that’s like, “Wait, what happened?”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
With that said, I do think people are going to want more information about exactly what happened with the woman, now that they’ve kind of put that out there.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I don’t have any basis to think this isn’t true. But because there is a complete break in causation and relevance between the first part and the second part, and that non sequitur—maybe innocently!—makes the story seem weirder than it otherwise would.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Wait, the plastic duffel tote things? I HAVE MANY OF THOSE!!
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I gave away my huge oversupply of plastic bins today (purchased in an attempt to have LESS clutter) by leaving them on the curb and just hoping people would want them. Which they did!
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
One of my favorite festival stories was leaving at the end of a press/industry screening at TIFF and hearing a guy behind me with (I think) a Russian accent saying, “That is for older audience.” And he pauses, and with this extremely knowing, weary fatigue, he says, “Afternoon.”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
There are times when I find out what length of ovation a very okay movie received at its festival bow, and I just go … “For that?”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
1. I absolutely believe this particular movie is gorgeous and wonderful, based on everything I have heard. 2. These long festival ovations have grown so ridiculous and undiscriminating that they no longer mean a thing.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Save some utter contempt for the grinning woman next to him who thinks taking something FROM A KID is hilarious and endearing.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. I think Stott said something early in the year that made me think somebody made them feel bad about it and they stopped. But it’s clearly needed.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I’m extremely glad the #phillies have brought back throwing water on people during the postgame interviews. I have missed it.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, exactly. At least two people in that piece, who come to the story in VERY different ways, who have a lot of processing to do (and it’s hard to know whether either of them ever will).
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I knew this was a really sad story, but it is somehow way sadder in this doc than in the previous tellings I have seen. I don’t want to spoil it (and please don’t in replies), but … there’s a lot of insight that has not been gained by those involved yet. www.netflix.com/us/title/816...
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
You should not be about to lose a game in extra innings by giving up one (1) single. That is absurd. You should have to get hit by a pitch and get two singles, dammit.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
A walkoff win that avoids getting completely screwed by the terrible ghost runner rule is particularly satisfying. #phillies
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, I go as press, so I apply for a press pass, which is a whole other deal.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Right. You can get away with it if the episode break is more of a pause.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
It just feels EXACTLY like a new boss (or executive or whoever) coming in and being like “We need to shake things up! I need to put my stamp on it! What if … we destroy the narrative structure of the episode? It’s so different! I’m so cool!”
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
That is the other thing. I think the decision not to show the result at the end is absolutely terrible. Feels VERY much like change for change’s sake. There’s a reason they’ve done Survivor 49 times and they show tribal council at the end, not the beginning.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m a couple episodes behind, and they are pretty much entirely why. So whatever it’s supposed to be doing to have them on there, it’s certainly not working on me.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
My frustration is that they’ve had twins before, and they were jerks, and those twins ALSO clearly had an advantage because they worked together. I’m really annoyed that we’re here again.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah. I mean, I get mad when their mistakes bunch up at inopportune times or when it seems like they miiiiight be letting their own very human frustrations (like when they are shown up) get to them. But for the most part, it’s very impressive that anyone can do that job.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s actually extremely impressive how good they are at it.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
You know, the little white strike zone box (which is only an estimate) will show you a lot of calls that look bad, but it will also show you a good number of guys griping about correct calls. #phillies

Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, I have browsed the novel but not read cover-to-cover, but my sense is that the first movie is less dark than the book, and this movie is less dark than that movie, so there's a general de-fanging of the original work.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
It is me, wishing this movie were a LOT more bitter.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh I know! It just ... was not a movie that stuck. But thank you, I always have, and I'm excited to be going back.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
I always think about the fact that the year MOONLIGHT was there, I didn't have it on my schedule, and by the time everybody started talking about it (and I think they actually added screenings?), it was impossible to get into it. Ah, well.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Also the longest line I have ever waited in at that festival was to see AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY. You really do never know.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Currently double-checking my TIFF schedule for any movies I have tentatively planned to see solely because of actors I like that, solemnly reflected upon, might turn out to be very bad. I call this "doing THE JUDGE check."

No, it's a documentary about the Toronto production in the 1970s that, like, every famous person in Canada was in.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
Also currently in the terrible phase of planning where I am desperate to fit in some docs like the one about the Toronto GODSPELL production. I feel like I should get to see one thing just because it's Me Catnip, right? RIGHT?
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
I'm working on my TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival!) list, and my spreadsheet has a column for genre. I dutifully wrote down "road movie" and "fantasy dramedy" and so on, and then I got to GDT's Frankenstein, and under "genre," I wrote, "Frankenstein, man." It's okay to amuse yourself.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh heavens. Yeah, if you’re looking for a voice of the people, that is … not the place to look.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social) reply parent
This is how well people who watch him are trained, by him, to believe “He’s too offensive! I am offended!” is the only objection to him that anybody has, as opposed to “his personality is obnoxious and and his thoughts are dull and under-considered.” Because that is what I said.
Linda Holmes (@lindaholmes.bsky.social)
What’s interesting is that I got a couple responses to this that amount to, “I disagree with your assertion that he has said all kinds of offensive things.” Which, of course, I didn’t say.
