I think she means legislative recognition? There’s multiple forms of state recognition - we actually are in NCAI because of Federal court of claims, after proving we were the direct descendants of the Lipan from 300 plus years ago. This shit’s complex.
I am sick of the constant erasure and intertribal violence. We are NOT living ghosts or the descendants of dead tribes. While learning about my grandfather’s family tree, we found documentation confirming that two generations in my line were enslaved Natives. Mother and son. The son later married another Native woman. I feel a responsibility to understand and carry their stories.
