Debbie Reese, one of the most prominent reviewers of Native children’s literature, just spread incorrect information about Indigenous people in Texas. She wrote, “But, the state of Texas does not extend state recognition to anyone.” This lie’s been used to erase Lipan people fighting for recognition

I've had a grudge against Reese for years, ever since she went out of her way to spit on Black Indians. I'm not surprised she's spitting on other NDNs too.

Not helping is me explaining to non Indigenous people how problematic she is. The response was "but she says things we agree with, so she's fine."

I've been wary of her for a long time now for similar things she's done in the past, unfortunately looks like she's still doing the same exclusionary bs 🥴

I’m so sick of the discrimination. We get erased from all angles.

I am sick of the constant erasure and intertribal violence. We are NOT living ghosts or the descendants of dead tribes. And if you want to see who is recognized by Texas, check out this document released by the Texas Education agency - T has a complex and violent history www.txel.org/media/2wskbh...

I think she means legislative recognition? There’s multiple forms of state recognition - we actually are in NCAI because of Federal court of claims, after proving we were the direct descendants of the Lipan from 300 plus years ago. This shit’s complex.

Yeah, my own people are halved with only the Oklahoma group federally recognized, but the Indiana group sure isn't *dead* and have enrollment. They took our last reservation and status with it, but we bought back our sacred land and persist in our traditional lands. As you said, this shit's complex.

This is unacceptable.

A person in a position of power over our stories and voices just callously erased us with an uninformed sentence: I will push back on behalf of ALL Lipan people. I can write a book about our long and complicated history & its intersection with my family. The sociopolitical status of my people is an interest of mine. Like. I know a ridiculous amount. We are currently working toward Federal recognition - until then, our rights of self-determination are severely limited

A correction was issued on the blog post - the note is very simplified, but it’s is a good first step.

Thank you for the doc, really cool to see the relatively high population in my region. I had a student get really excited last week because we were reading a primary source on the Lipan and she told me that was her tribe. Happened to be her birthday too!

I’ve considered Debbie Reese unsafe for a long time, ever since she intentionally misread someone’s being inspired by the horrors of indigenous and black history as finding the history inspiring I’m so sorry
