My psychology masters studies have really exposed me to the damage colonialism has done everywhere it has been practiced, including in the countries that practiced it. It probably set humanity back centuries.

I think any preparation for what will happen next year or in 2028 has to keep in mind that a federal government unshackled from oversight will simply seek the most efficient ways to strangle any opposition. Those ways won’t necessarily be by force.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
But one thing about the breakdown of the rule of law is that doing things like closing polling places or roads near polling places under any guise becomes conceivable simply because the rewards for doing so outweigh the risks.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I for one have no illusions that whatever they do will be done competently. However incompetence at large scales can still be very effective.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Tbf it’s not exactly unfathomable that they would literally enlist militias and brownshirts into federal service alongside every government employee qualified to carry a weapon in order to achieve this. They could also do what the NSDAP did, which was simply close polling places for “security.”
The Fig Economy (@figgityfigs.bsky.social) reposted
Look, they do not have the capacity or competence to do this at the scale they want you to fear they do, and your fear is precisely their greatest force multiplier. Everybody who is cowed into silence by their threats allows them a smaller pool to focus on.

It’s interesting to me that the surface level ideas and sometimes even the institutions of a movement can become a vehicle for something that that movement wouldn’t even recognize as belonging to it. It’s like success breeds not only imitation but cooption.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Absolutely, you’re right. I appreciate the correction. I was honestly thinking more about the meta-movement as a whole rather than the individuals in that movement. You’re right to emphasize that what the TERFs are is what they say they are.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s something about every liberation movement that makes it so that once the basic goals of that movement are accomplished (on a surface level) some part of that movement pivots to an orthodoxy that defends that new status quo at the expense of the next liberation movement.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
But the second it’s over, like with McCarthy, it will be as if all of this just never happened.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent

It seems silly to have to say it to people, but expertise is as deep a knowledge of what is false, as of what is true. It’s not a statistical average of everything you’ve been exposed to. It’s exercise over diet in that sense.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
As far as I know, and that isn’t very far tbf, an LLM cannot apply an experienced human level of discernment between information that is of low value or veracity, and information that is of high value. It can’t read critically, which is what an expert does by definition.

Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Sadly I can’t think of many liberals in the media who fall into the first category anymore. Lots of Jake Tappers creaming themselves to the “sight of the power of our freedom” (a real thing he said about cruise missiles hitting Syria).

I grew up around a lot of undocumented people. They had no less right to breath free air than I did. They were no less American than I was. That’s how I feel about it. This is a betrayal of them, and that is a betrayal of ourselves.

I do recommend it. Very timely.

It’s crazy that Americans really gaslit themselves into thinking they invented freedom for decades. I think if we’re even allowed to talk about anything that’s happening now in 100 years, it will be that.

“Guardians” as in Gilead. Pretty much the SS.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
That’s right. At an airport, the U.S. government leverages its broad powers to deny you your right to counsel, but you still have that right. They can just make your life miserable if you dare exercise it, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the right.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Why do you think we’ll ever get power back? These people are giving it up.

Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social)
This is called “gaslighting.”
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social)
There is nothing quite so clarifying about the typical American’s real politics than how they respond to *slight* inconveniences. The loudest denunciations I’ve heard of recent protests cited that they blocked traffic, and were therefore wrong. At least the bootlickers let you know who they are.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
This is what erasure does, unfortunately. It often comes in the clothing of “pragmatism.”
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Interesting point.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I just took that to mean that men are driven by fear, largely in the form of shame, which is moderated by the female gaze. One can argue this isn’t true, but it seems to be a coherent idea to me.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social)
If our federal government wasn’t this much of a fucking joke, actually starting these riots to begin with, I’d be lobbying for an independent federal agency that does nothing but investigate the police. Permanent special grand juries in EVERY. MAJOR. CITY.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I genuinely would love to see an analysis of how much money the LAPD has cost the city’s taxpayers in the last, let’s say 30 years. It’s probably enough to build 20 brand new high schools.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I feel like it’s ridiculous in 2025 to even have to explain yourself here. The LA cops have been an armed white supremacist goon militia for literally a hundred years at this point. In no era have they ever been respectable.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social)
Americans jerk it to “2nd amendment solutions” 24/7, but the second Americans actually riot and fight back against oppression, they fall all over themselves to say that violence achieves nothing. If it achieves nothing, then why are you afraid of it?
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Lol. Good line.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I won't argue.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Perhaps we should just drop the qualifiers. They are weapons. All weapons can kill, if used with deadly intent.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
They will look at that as a scoreboard.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I see the police violence. You see the police violence? Why are you so sure that others won't?
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
It may be the result of being bullied as a child. I guess there's somebody angry inside me who does feel powerless, even if that powerlessness is just a memory.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I get it. But "sacrosanct" or "sacred" have broadly secular applications. The law being "sacred" is something that also trascends religion per se. Law codes, around which religions were build, were as much about secular governance as religion. Otherwise I do agree on the implications you mention.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
blah blah blah. The cops wouldn't be shooting reporters in the street if they were supremely confident that protests don't work.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Not only that, but I am keenly aware of how weak and inconsiderable the lack of danger makes me in comparison with those who have no choice.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
As someone for whom life has always been absurdly safe, I find the cognitive dissonance of it intolerable. People who can't imagine switching places with someone who has less power than they do fucking bore me.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Americans claiming violent protest doesn't work are the cutest of all Americans.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Seriously. They are going to look at the police violence and say: "hmmm. not a fan of that."
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
It's pretty unhinged for Americans, with our particular history, to look at protests and say: "That never works." It literally is the only thing that has ever worked.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't really see what's objectionable about the word. I wouldn't use it, but it's not CRAZY.

I have my own opinion brewing as I’ve been watching the show, but what do you all think about The Handmaid’s Tale? Is its lack of trans representation a form of TERF ideology or trans erasure? Did anyone feel it was conspicuously silent on this aspect of gender?

Hot take: LLMs and transformer based Ai generally should be restricted to people over 18. They’re probably 10x the threat that the internet was to education when I was in school, with few of the advantages.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
That structure, though barren at first, is the foundation of the child’s intellectual development. It we allow kids to finger paint their way to university, we will be robbing them of a real adult life. I wager anti-Ai schools will soon emerge to try to avoid this.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
It reminds me of I think Jean Piaget arguing that the shift in children’s artwork from fantastically colored worlds to stark monochrome constructs is the necessary death of the child’s imaginative reality, replaced with discipline and structure.
Lloyd (@lloydw.bsky.social) reply parent
Amen. It makes me incredibly sad that the amazing moral and intellectual lessons I learned by learning how to write will be, for so many young people, a complete mystery.
