For 6 years after Sandy Hook, I conducted training for schools, churches + community groups. I would tell them there are 5 factors present in the vast majority of school shootings: white, male, teen, emotionally distressed, access to guns. Guns are the easiest to eliminate if we had the will.

Indeed. When I first became active in politics in the 90s, Democrats were proudly cynical about patriotism and the flag. Then, the GOP essentially claimed it for themselves. That, and faith. Huge error on the part of Democrats. But, at least where I live, we Democrats proudly fly the flag again.

Young, white guys are pretty oblivious to racism. If you grew up in a wealthy, white bubble community, which they did, there's virtually no awareness. It's not necessarily intentional, it's oblivious. They're not hostile to people of color, they just don't get exposed to cultural variety.
