Besides babysitting, my first paying job, at 13, was as a counsellor at a Y day camp for a few summers. After turning 16, I became a lifeguard and swimming instructor at outdoor freshwater beach areas.

It’s not just geopolitics where his nostalgia is a problem, but the desire to hold on to neoliberal economic policy. It’s time for that to die a horrible death.

Can’t we have both biopics? It is unfortunate Springsteen has lived and worked in an era of relative peace, yet he has done a lot of good. He donates to community services and striking workers wherever he tours, and has put his weight behind many good causes (e.g. No Nukes and human rights).

Continuing to strike after being ordered back, even with an imposed contract. There’s a contract now, so you have to work. BCTF stayed out an extra 2 weeks in 2005 before the threats to their finances became too much. Eventually they won at the SCOC in 2016, and had the old contract restored.
Lucinda (@lucindalubelle.bsky.social) reply parent
And they’ll lose at the SCOC which sided with the BCTF in 2016 over an imposed contract from 2005, setting a precedent nationwide. Freedom to collectively bargain is a right.
Lucinda (@lucindalubelle.bsky.social)
This is so worth it. I did it with the BCTF for two weeks. We stayed out after being ordered back in 2005 with an imposed deal. It took until 2016 to have that contract voided by the SCOC, but we were vindicated. The Carney government @mark-carney.bsky.social is offside with this one.

Compassion is free. Support for the unhoused and street-involved is not very costly. In my community, we can call a hotline to report people on the streets whose behaviour is concerning. A team then checks on them, and delivers them to or calls for an appropriate service, if necessary.

Commuters make choices (lower housing cost is one) but the commute is rough on them! I live in the car-dependent suburb where I worked, which meant a short drive to work (4km), plus there’s all the green space, leafy streets, etc. Not everyone has that option.

Plans for severe weather have to start way before the storms inevitably hit. Officials must reconsider allowing camping, roads, and homes along rivers that can flood. Likewise, in areas prone to wildfires, officials have to rethink development and infrastructure decisions.

There won’t be new private RV parks anytime soon. Land costs are high, and they’re expensive to build (sewage and water infrastructure, electricity). Just like home sharing apps, RV parks make more money from short-term guests than long-term. Long-stay is cheaper in the winter and more available.
Lucinda (@lucindalubelle.bsky.social) reply parent
Permitting land or home owners to have someone live in an RV on a private lot, with appropriate infrastructure, is probably the way to go. Like a laneway house, but on wheels.
