FINAL: Red Sox 6, Guardians 4 Trevor Story's bizarre home run is the highlight of a productive yet disjointed offensive performance. The Sox now trail the Blue Jays by 2.5 in the AL East with 23 games to play. www.bostonherald.com/2025/09/01/t...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Weird play. Trevor Story just hit one right to the base of Pesky's Pole, and while the right fielder was attempting to make the catch the ball bounced out of his glove, hit the pole and fell onto the wall. Initially called a foul ball, that is ruled a home run on review.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox load the bases again with nobody out after Narvaez's two-run single but come away with nothing. It's 5-3 Sox heading to the sixth and Boston has left nine men on base.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox load the bases with no outs and this time take advantage. Carlos Narvaez pinch hits and delivers a two-run single. Sox lead 5-3. Still no outs and runners at the corners.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
It was a grind, but Brayan Bello was able to make a respectable showing. 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 4 K, 3 BB (100 pitches/65 strikes)
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Blue Jays-Reds game started roughly 20 minutes earlier than this Sox game, and yet that one is in the seventh while we're still in the bottom of the fourth here.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Trevor Story ties the game at 3-3 with an RBI single. He's got 85 RBI on the season.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Brayan Bello needs 35 pitches to get through the second and is up to 59 already through two. That inning could have been a lot worse though. Sox only trail 3-2 despite the first five batters reaching safely.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Guardians take a 3-2 lead on back to back singles. Bello has thrown 47 pitches already and has yet to record an out in the second inning.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Trouble brewing here in the second. Brayan Bello goes walk, single, walk to load the bases with nobody out.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Romy Gonzalez with an RBI single to make it 2-0 in the first. Still just one out for the Sox.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox strike first. Roman Anthony singles, advances to third on an Alex Bregman double and is then awarded home after Guardians starter Parker Messick balks. Sox lead 1-0.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Aroldis Chapman would have been highly sought after on the free agent marketplace this winter, but the All-Star closer had a simple explanation for why he decided to re-sign with the Red Sox early. www.bostonherald.com/2025/09/01/r...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox brought back a pair of familiar faces as their Sept. 1 call-ups, though one likely wasn't on anyone's bingo card heading into the week. www.bostonherald.com/2025/09/01/r...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Ali Sanchez and Zack Kelly are the Red Sox’s Sept. call-ups. Sanchez was reacquired last night in a minor league trade, and to clear space on the 40-man Marcelo Mayer was moved to the 60-day IL.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Red Sox today: Anthony RF, Bregman 3B, Story SS, Gonzalez 2B, Refsnyder DH, Eaton LF, Rafaela CF, Lowe 1B, Wong C, Bello P
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Alex Cora says Brayan Bello will pitch tomorrow, Garrett Crochet on Tuesday and Wednesday is TBD. Cora wouldn’t confirm who the two roster call ups will be.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
FINAL: Red Sox 5, Pirates 2 Jarren Duran's inside-the-park homer helps the Sox avoid a potentially disappointing home sweep. Now the calendar turns to September, and next up is the Guardians. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/31/j...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Pirates load the bases against Garrett Whitlock but come away with nothing after Alexander Canario strikes out. Sox still lead 5-2.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Another sellout crowd for the Red Sox today: 36,583.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Alexander Canario takes Justin Slaten deep for a solo shot. Red Sox lead is 5-2 in the seventh.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Ceddanne Rafaela extends the lead to 5-1 with an infield single.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Strange outing for Lucas Giolito, who has five walks but still goes six innings with one run allowed on three hits. I don't think you can ever say someone was efficient while walking that many, but Giolito pulled it off.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Duran benefitted from a couple of bobbles and boots in center field, so I wouldn't be shocked if they eventually go back and change it to a triple plus an error. Still, he beat the eventual throw by enough that it might stand.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
That is a stand-up, inside the park home run for Jarren Duran, who puts the Red Sox ahead 4-1.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Roman Anthony ties the game at 1-1 with a run-scoring groundout. Romy Gonzalez had previously reached on an error and advanced to third on a ground rule double by Carlos Narvaez.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Lucas Giolito allows a run to score on a wild pitch but draws a groundout to limit the damage to one run. Pirates lead 1-0 in the fourth.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Lucas Giolito was cruising but has now issued three straight walks. Pirates have the bases loaded with two outs.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
"Quietly and in his own way he's one of the leaders of this team." Aroldis Chapman is reportedly finalizing an extension that will keep him in Boston next year. Sunday Alex Cora spoke about the impact he's had on the Red Sox since his arrival. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/31/r...

Alex Cora on Wilyer Abreu: "Slower than what we expected. He's been able to hit and move around defensively but he hasn't been able to run. Are we concerned? Yes and no. He'll be back at one point but I think it's been longer than expected."
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Former Central Catholic star Cam Devanney will make his MLB debut today at Fenway for the Pirates, he says.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Red Sox today: Anthony RF, Bregman 3B, Duran LF, Story SS, Lowe 1B, Yoshida DH, Gonzalez 2B, Rafaela CF, Narváez C, Giolito P

For the past few years Kyle Schwarber has ranked among baseball's best power hitters and this year is a top candidate for NL MVP. Where would the Red Sox be if they'd re-signed him after the 2021 season? www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/31/m...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Pirates announced they have called up Cam Devanney from Triple-A. He is a former Central Catholic star from Amherst, N.H. who could potentially make his MLB debut this weekend at Fenway Park.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Payton Tolle channelled his best Cody Rhodes impression as he stepped to the mic, giving us a big "So, what do you want to talk about?" before speaking at length for 10 minutes about his debut.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Payton Tolle: "It was the greatest experience of my life and the greatest atmosphere in baseball. I'm proud of it and I'll look back on this day for a long time thinking about this moment."
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
FINAL: Pirates 4, Red Sox 2 Payton Tolle was electric in his debut, but the bullpen can't hold the lead as the Sox see their four-game win streak snapped. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/29/p...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Pittsburgh extends its lead to 4-2 on a squeeze bunt. Call was originally out but was overturned on review.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox announce a paid attendance of 36,344, their 17th straight sellout.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Now the Pirates have the lead on an RBI double by Andrew McCutchen. Just like that it's 3-2 Pirates.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Pittsburgh ties the game on a two-run double by Tommy Pham. It'll be a no-decision for Payton Tolle, whose final line goes: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
That will do it for Payton Tolle, who allows a pair of singles with one out in the sixth and walks off to a huge ovation.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Roman Anthony just took Paul Skenes deep for a solo shot. Sox lead 2-0 in the fifth.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Payton Tolle is the first Red Sox pitcher to record eight or more strikeouts in his MLB debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka had 10 in 2007.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Put the ball in play and good things will happen. The Sox benefit from a throwing error that allows a run to score on a Ceddanne Rafaela single.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
There will be no no-no for Paul Skenes at Fenway tonight. Masataka Yoshida takes him the other way for Boston's first hit of the game.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Great composure from Tolle. He allows a walk and a ground rule double to put men at second and third with no outs, but then escapes unscathed with two strikeouts and a flyout.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Paul Skenes. Pretty good too. Easy 99 mph the whole inning, drawing lots of weak contact and fooling Jarren Duran for a strikeout to end the inning.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Tolle goes four straight fastballs and blows away Jared Triolo for his first career strikeout.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Payton Tolle's first big league pitch is a 97 mph fastball for a strike.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Tom Caron just threw out the first pitch here at Fenway as part of the celebration of his 30 years at NESN. I caught up with him yesterday about his career, his journey and how his path could have turned out quite differently. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/29/r...

"He's a big boy, I don't think he's easily intimidated, and everything I've heard about him is he has the stuff to stick around for a long time." www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/29/r...

Alex Cora says Wilyer Abreu is receiving treatment this weekend and will try to run again on Monday. Sounds like he probably won’t be activated before the end of the home stand.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Craig Breslow says he expects Payton Tolle will remain a contributor down the stretch, though whether he remains in the rotation or goes to the bullpen will depend on the team’s needs at any given point.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Red Sox today: Anthony RF, Bregman 3B, Duran LF, Story SS, Yoshida DH, Gonzalez 1B, Sogard 2B, Rafaela CF, Wong C, Tolle P

The relevant portion is the third paragraph. If Tolle were added to the 40-man in September, or not at all, he could still replace a pitcher on the IL, of which the Red Sox have plenty. This story explains how it works and some past examples. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/21-y...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social) reply parent
They only have to be in the organization, not necessarily the 40-man or the active roster. So this isn't being done with an eye for October, this is being done because they believe Tolle is their best option the rest of the way.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
It's happening. Payton Tolle is being called up by the Red Sox and will take the hill against Paul Skenes at Fenway Park tomorrow night. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/28/t...

FINAL: Red Sox 3, Orioles 2 The Sox complete a four-game sweep of the O's to cap off a crucial 7-1 road trip. Boston is now a season-high 15 games over .500 with the Pittsburgh Pirates coming to Fenway this weekend. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/28/r...

Jeremiah Jackson ties the game at 2-2 with an RBI double. Crochet is teetering here in the fifth with two men in scoring position and still nobody out.

Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Trevor Story goes yard to put the Red Sox up 1-0.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
FINAL: Red Sox 3, Orioles 2 A stunner in Baltimore as Ceddanne Rafaela hits a go-ahead two-run home run to flip things in the top of the ninth. The Sox have won three straight and are a season-high 14 games over .500. www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/27/c...
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Romy Gonzalez got all of that one, but Dylan Carlson tracks it down and makes the catch at the wall. Very well might have robbed a home run.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Ceddanne Rafaela flips the script and goes deep for a two-run shot to put the Red Sox up 3-2 in the top of the ninth.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox get runners at the corners with nobody out and come away with nothing. Roman Anthony and Alex Bregman both strike out and Trevor Story grounds out to short.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social) reply parent
*23 starts total.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Brayan Bello's final line: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB. It's his 15th quality start of the season in 22 starts total.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Oh that's brutal. A deep fly ball to the warning track falls in right between Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela to score a run. A horrible miscommunication at the worst possible time puts the O's up 2-1 in the seventh.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Ceddanne Rafaela's wrist looks like it's fine. Lines one into the gap for a double.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Baltimore ties the game on an RBI double by Dylan Beavers. Ceddanne Rafaela made a diving attempt and initially appeared to hurt his wrist, but he's staying in the game.

The third time was not the charm. For the third straight inning the Red Sox had the bases loaded and could not get a run across.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
The Red Sox load the bases again and once again come away with nothing. Story grounds out to send the game to extras.
Mac Cerullo (@maccerullo.bsky.social)
Nathaniel Lowe, welcome to Boston. A two-run home run ties the game in the bottom of the ninth.
