I am also pretty sure the a in atetl is in fact short, contrary to Karttunen. Unfortunately the Tetelcingo dictionary does no include a word for testicle, but it should be xitetl and atetl rather than ötetl.
I also think Karttunen is wrong to reconstruct xip as a root, the root xi- reconstructs to UA as "skin, husk" and -pe is a privative verbalizer. So 'atari-pe means "to castrate" so xipe is originally a verb meaning "to skin" (which in Nahuatl then adds the verbalizing sufix -wa giving xipe:wa).
Karttunen's gloss is wrong unfortunately, atetl is not a compound, which can be seen by comparing with the corscholan cognate 'ata-ri "testicle" In xitetl, I think it likely is the same xi- meaning "skin, husk, shell'.
A stupid meme is making the rounds again, claiming the Nahuatl word for avocado, "ahuacatl," means "testicle." FFS, no it, doesn't. Not any more than "nut" or "ball" does. Those are METAPHORICAL USES. Quit othering / ridiculing Indigenous languages. @magnuspharao.bsky.social explained this: 1/

I wasnt kidding actually, I think students can't easily be expected to go by anything other than what feels as learning. Though of course you are right that we can and should challenge that and show other ways to learn. But...
It doesn't really matter as long as students *experience* them as useful for learning.

Problemet er konservatisme uanset hvilken tro den bekender sig til. Alle der vil helliggøre fortidens værdier og påtvinge andre at leve efter dem, støtter patriarkatet og dets idealer.

I think they counted days for religious purposes primarily. I think maize amd cacao can be stored fine between harvests even in hot humid places.

You'd have to invent the number system before inventing the calendar system, so clearly they were counting stuff early on. But is numerals = writing?
Also I am not sure most archaeologists would be comfortable talking about Olmec "states" any ways, last I read they were "chiefdoms".
I don't know what they were used for, and I am not sure it matters, except for the state formation argument. They sometimes have calendric dates on them.
First of all, I think by now evidence is that the earliest Maya writing is contemporaneous with the first evidence of Olmec writing. Second we have Olmec cylinder seals. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_And... Third, it seems that in Mesoamerica the emergence of writing might have been tied to calendrics.
You'll end up with highly suspect claims regardless of how you try to make the argument that states require writing, either you'll have to adopt a suspiciously broad definition of "writing" or a suspiciously narrow definition of "state".

You will never find anyone who proposes such an linear order of cultural development who also will also accept that writing can predate ceramics. Also it is exactly poststructuralists have exactly been the ones to overemphasize the need for writing for state formation.....
Ok, I see Ruth Shady has made a claim of possible proto-Khipus at Caral. But you state it as it is an established fact they had them, which is weird. The earliest known 100% sure khipus are from the Wari about 1000 years ago.
