Here in Cheshire we haven’t had a hose pipe ban so I’ve been lucky. I was out tonight and soaked the front lawn. Even so, go down more than an inch in the borders and the soil is bone dry. Infact it’s more like dust than soil.

Do you remember this? This was before Stevie played for them but the team was coached at the time in 1967 by Ian St John. Skem went on to play Enfield in the final that year. They drew 0-0 at Wembley (missing a penalty in the last minute of extra time) before losing the replay at Maine Road 3-0.

They really were. Skem’s big rival at the time were Wigan Athletic. They were semi-professional & played in a higher league but we met in the cups a few times. They always won by the odd goal but once Skem won 2-1 in the final of the Floodlit Cup when floodlights at that level were a new thing 😊
I watched nearly all of his games playing for Skem United. Even went to Enfield away that year in the Amateur Cup QF. They were losing 1-0 when Stevie scored equaliser before Micky Burns (who went on to play at Anfield for Blackpool) scored a last minute winner.

Not really. There’s never been much history between us. We beat them in the 1974 FA Cup Final & we signed a few of their better players in the past but as a city & a people they are like Liverpool. Passionate about their football. With the backing of Saudi money they now see themselves as rivals.
St James’s Park is never a nice place to go to. Yes we’ve had a few comfortable wins over the years but more recently it’s always been a difficult place to come away from with 3pts. With all that’s been going on & with it being their first home game of the season Monday will be a tough, tough game.
It’s just a picture of a hole in the garden. It’s about a spades depth. The significance? I’ve worked in this garden for 40 years and in all that time I’ve NEVER known it to be so dry. Literally 6” down and the soil is bone dry and that’s despite me watering regularly all summer with a hose pipe.
